Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC

A ovate biface, cordate type Lower Palaeolthic handaxe, from the Middle Achalean period dated to circa 250 000 year BP. It is a large handaxe which has a trimmed butt and is straight sided, the point has been broken off recently. It has soft-hammer reduction. The patination is similar in colour to another flint of this date which was found in the Ouse valley. This flint has not been highly finished, although it does have evidence of re-working. There is a flaw in the flint where probably the frost has started to scatter it.

A small harness link of Anglo-Scandinavian design, dating to the late Anglo-Saxon period. The artefact is made of lead, and would have had two rings either side of it to form the bridle cheekpiece. The rings would have been attached to the 'arms', which extend horizontally from either side of the artefact. Between these two arms there is a head of some sort of creature. The face has eyes, nose, mouth and ears on top of its head (like a bear). The artefact measures 41.32mm (from the tips of the 'arms'), 26.82mm (from the creature's ears to his 'chin'), 11.97mm from the tip of his 'nose…

A large silver finger-ring, probably dating to the 16th or 17th century. The hoop has been made to look like a belt, and has three double looped buckles, two the same size and one slightly larger. the sytle of buckle dates the ring to circa 1550 - 1650. The 'belt' has been decorated and the buckles have pins and pin recesses. The ring has been damaged and so is incomplete; the break looks quite recent. The silver has started to go a dark greyish-silver colour.

A silver ring, from the late 16th or 17th century. The broad hoop is inscribed on the inner face with the legend 'KEPE FAITH TILL DEATH'. A join in the silver is evident on the inner face between the words 'DEATH' and 'KEPE'. Traces of gilding remain on the interior. The external face has no decoration and the ring is slightly mis-shapen. The silver has gone a mid-greyish black. The diameter of the ring is 22.92mm and the hoop is 5.94mm wide and 1.5mm thick. A broken fragment of a medieval silver-gilt annular brooch. The brooch is in the form of either a square, now misshapen, or a polygon (possibly a pentagon). Only one complete side survives, and parts of two adjoining sides. The frame bears an inscription on each side, with Lombardic lettering. One side reads: [IESU NAZAR]ENUS/REX IUD/EO[RUM], and the other [CASP]AR/MELC[HI]OR/BALTA[ZAR]. Single discs at each of the two surviving corners are engraved on both sides with what may be animals or grotesques, and possibly the figure of an angel, but wear makes identification difficult. A flint scraper possibly Neolithic, possibly Bronze Age. The scraper has been heavily worked and retouched to form two cutting edges. On the reverse of the flint a small bulb of percussion still survives and several ripples extend down from it. On the other side of the flint it is evident that previous flakes have been removed from the surface of this flake, before this flake was removed from the core. The two cutting (or scraping) edges are parallel to each other along the longest length of the flake. These edges show some evidence of retouch but both sides are extremely worn. The fli…

A gold finger ring consisting of two rods of square section, which have been twisted together and joined by hammering on the reverse side. The ring is of a similar type to examples from the Late Saxon and Viking periods, from the late 9th Century until c.1100, although these types of ring usually have rods, which has a circular section, particularly in the Viking examples. Gold rings with square section rods occur in the British Isles and may be a local form. The surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicates an approximate gold content for the ring of 91%; it weighs…

Short length of rod originally of circular section of about 5 mm diameter. Both ends have been hammered, cut and finally torn. The hammer facets taper back and almost meet in the middle. The thinned blunter ends have steep 'cut' facets and are partly rough-fractured. The undamaged parts of the sides have slight longitudinal facets and fine striations from the original finishing. Such a small and undiagnostic fragment cannot be identified definitively. However, all the features, including the mode of fragmentation and the metal composition are consistent with this being part of a Bro…

Silver‑gilt posy ring Treasure case number: 2004 T77. Date: 17th or early 18th century This ring has a plain exterior, the hoop of D‑shaped section. The gilding is worn from the exterior but remains inside. The inside is inscribed: 'f'eare the lord', with a maker's mark in a shield‑shaped surround, which may possibly be read either as W above H (or M) or as H (or M) crowned. A late Iron Age baldric ring, which would have been used as part of the composite belt, used to hang a sword. It is also possible that this ring formed part of some other attachment, probably relative to a strap or harness/ bridle fitting. An exact parallel for this piece could not be found. the ring consists of a core of iron (forming the shape of the ring). This iron ring has then been coated in a shell of high quality copper alloy, which has a shiny dark green patina.
