Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A long hollow, bi-conical perforated lead weight. The hole which runs through the centre of the weight has a circular section. These weighs are not yet completely understood. It is possible they could have been fishing or bird net weights dating from the medieval period or later, but due to a lack of excavated examples these weights must remain undated. The weight is undecorated, but both ends are well rounded and taper inwards. The weight is complete. The lead is a light whitish-grey colour.

A cast copper alloy unidentified object. The object is only a fragment of a larger item and could be part of mount, knife handle or other decorative fitting. The object is shaped like a rabbit/hare which is running, with its front and back legs outstretched however this shape appears to be a chance resemblence due to the pattern of breakage with the 'head', 'ears' and legs all ending in breaks. There is a hole in the centre of the object. The item has been broken at multiple points, including the ears, nose and both sets of legs of the animal, if that is in fact what is it. All of th…

A cast copper alloy unidentifiable object. The object is rounded with a flat base and reverse but a domed front. Cast integrally to the main body of the object there is what appears to be some sort of attachment mechanism, in the form of a loop. The reverse of the loop has two wedge shaped grooves cut into it (points together). It is therefore unclear how this would have worked or how it would have been fastened. The copper alloy is a mid greyish-green colour. This object remains undatable.

A cast copper alloy object, which is possibly some sort of fitting – maybe related to a horse’s harness or bridle. The object has been cast as one piece and consists of an openwork square, with two projecting arms extending out from opposite corners of the square. One of these projecting arms is longer than the other and has a moulded knop near the terminal. The copper alloy has a circular section. The metal is a dark greyish-brown colour and is slightly pitted. The object resembles 11th century horse harness fittings but a late medieval or post-medieval date cannot be ruled out.
