There are traces of white enamel on the shoulders and green and black (?) on the bezel. While this ring conforms to 16th century shape and decoration, the use of a flat hoop and bezel, with metal of this thinness, is extremely unusual and has no parallels in the British Museum collection. The bezel is comprised of a rectangular red glass to imitate a precious stone, in a rectangular setting. Arched decoration surrounds the setting. The bezel of this ring has close parallels with 2004 T485 (see Treasure Annual Report 2004, no.369), but this ring is a 19th-century imitation of a medieval-style ring. Therefore, this is classed as not Treasure.

A gold post-medieval posy ring. The ring has a D-shaped section with undecorated exterior. The interior has been inscribed in lower case italic script: 'Heue 72 25' my happeness' (Heaven is my happeness (sic)). The inscription 'Heaven is my happyness' is recorded by Joan Evans, English Posies and Posy-Rings (Oxford, 1931), p. 47. A posy ring inscribed with that version and with the maker’s mark ‘TT’ is held in the British Museum’s collections (1961,12-2.211). The style of lettering on the ring suggests a 17th century date. Gold ring, the narrow hoop of D-shaped section now distorted. The exterior is very worn. Traces of engraved decoration remain: a schematic skull and a pattern of diagonal engraved bands which extend around the hoop. The interior is inscribed in lower case 'My beloved is christ MB Jan 96', expressing the idea of the unity of the couple in Christ, with the skull a constant reminder of death on the exterior. The date 96 appears to refer to 1696. Sometimes inscriptions are contracted and the interpretation not obvious. Others in this vein are 'In Christ and thee my comfort be' and 'May Ch…

A Late Bronze Age, gold penannular ring. The penannular ring has a roughly oval cross-section, the inner surface being flattened. The terminals are flat. The ring has alternate stripes of yellow and paler gold; this decorative banding has been considerably worn on each face and on the angles of the flattened inner surface. Examination of the surfaces of the terminals indicates that the piece probably comprises a gold wrapping over a core of different material; in such cases this is frequently copper alloy. The presence of a base metal core was subsequently confirmed in the laboratory.…

Short length of rod originally of circular section of about 5 mm diameter. Both ends have been hammered, cut and finally torn. The hammer facets taper back and almost meet in the middle. The thinned blunter ends have steep 'cut' facets and are partly rough-fractured. The undamaged parts of the sides have slight longitudinal facets and fine striations from the original finishing. Such a small and undiagnostic fragment cannot be identified definitively. However, all the features, including the mode of fragmentation and the metal composition are consistent with this being part of a Bro…

A gold finger ring consisting of two rods of square section, which have been twisted together and joined by hammering on the reverse side. The ring is of a similar type to examples from the Late Saxon and Viking periods, from the late 9th Century until c.1100, although these types of ring usually have rods, which has a circular section, particularly in the Viking examples. Gold rings with square section rods occur in the British Isles and may be a local form. The surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicates an approximate gold content for the ring of 91%; it weighs…
