A copper-alloy coin weight from the medieval to post-medieval period. This coin weight is a representational weight of an angel. These coin weights are British and date from between the 15th - 16th centuries, having first been issued in 1464. This particular coin weight is unifaced and square. The obverse probably depicts St Michael spearing a dragon (to the right) but it is so badly worn that it is difficult to be sure. The offical mint weight for an angel would have been 5.18g, the surviving coin weights are usually lighter. This weight weighs 4.05g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of a D-shaped buckle with plates. The actual D-shaped frame of the buckle has been lost; this artefact represents the 'plates' which are often attached to these types of buckles. This artefact has been constructed from one sheet of copper-alloy, which has been bent in half and then a notch has been taken out of the bent terminal to allow the D-shaped buckle frame to move more easily. This terminal has also been climped to minimise the movement of the D-shaped frame (had it still be in position). Both plates are roughly rectangular and both have rivet holes drilled through them at …

A copper-alloy coin weight from the post-medieval period. This coin weight is a representational weight of a noble. These are British and date from the 15th - 16th centuries. This example appears to depict (on the obverse) a ship with two lions. The reverse is blank; it is a unifaced round coin weight. This is a particularly crude example as the ship's body has been made up of a rather crude brick-like design, other examples are more sophisticated. The offical mint weight of a Noble (after 1411) tends to be 7g. This coin weight weighs 6.4g the surviving coin weights are usually lighter…

A finger ring made of copper-alloy. The ring has a thick hoop, which gets thicker towards the shoulders, as the hoop becomes the bezel. The bezel is integral to the hoop and is circular in shape. Copper-alloy belt-mount. It is flat, quite thin (c. 1 mm) and almost square, measuring 33 x 34 mm. There is a copper-alloy rivet in each corner, 3 to 4 mm long, and the mount is decorated with a black-letter lower-case m, probably for the Virgin Mary. The m is on a background decorated with bold rocker-arm engraving, and all is enclosed within an engraved single-line border, which has been drawn with a couple of false starts. The style of the lettering dates it broadly to the 15th century.

A large leaf-shaped lead weight, with four facets. Each facet has been decorated with high relief lines, similar to the veins on a leaf. Both terminals of the weight have broken off. At one terminal there does appear to be the remains of a loop, now broken and very much worn. These weighs are not yet completely understood. It is possible they could have been fishing weights dating from the Roman period or later, but due to a lack of excavated examples these weights must remain undated. The lead is a light whitish-grey colour.
