Miniature lead vessel, probably for use as a toy. This type of jug is one of the most commonly encountered medieval miniatures and they often correspond very closely with full-sized ceramic counterparts. The jug has become quite squashed and broken whilst in the ground and the thin handle has broken off. There is no cast decoration over the surface of the jug. This type of toy became popular from the late 13th or 14th century onwards, mainly in an urban context, and would have been mass produced like the pilgrim souvenirs common during the same period. It is possible that some minature…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Double-conical lead weight with central vertical perforation, 8.8mm wide. The weight is decorated in high-relief on both sides with a zig-zag line, with a pellet in each angle. This kind of lead weight is a very frequent metal-detecting find, especially on ploughed and pasture land. There is some archaeological evidence for these lead weights to have been used as spindle whorls in the 16th/17th century (pers. comm. Dr Kevin Leahy), but has been suggested that they could also have been used as net sinkers, fishing weights or weight for traps at a somewhat later date.

A cast copper alloy heart shaped chafing dish handle. Chafing dishes were domestic utensils made of metal or earthenware for holding burning charcoal or other combustible material. This was then used to cook food or keep it hot at the table (Lewis, 1973). This particular handle came from a type B1 chafing-dish. This type of dish dates from circa 1450 - 1550. The vessels themselves were cast in one piece and finished on a lathe. Each vessel would have had two handles. The handle has a pitted surface. The inverted heart shaped handle would have hung down from a simple staple. The staple…

Medieval copper alloy heraldic stud, probably of late 13th or 14th century date The stud has a heater shield-shaped head. No enamel survives on the front of the shield. But four raised, parallel lines can be seen across the surface, diagonally. Above and below this an image can be seen but it is not clear. Any other surface detail has been lost. The integral shank projects from the rear and is of square section. The point of the shank has broken off. Ashley (2002, p 9-16) argues that many heraldic studs were attached to horse harness straps, but others may have been employed on variou…
