Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A Neolithic axehead (or possibly an adze). The axe dates from between circa 3500 BC to 2100 BC. The implement has been extensively knapped and highly polished into a sub-oval shape. One terminal tapers to a slightly pointed end; the other (the butt) is rounded and wider. The butt end is asymmetrical, while the tapered terminal appears damaged. No natural cortex is visible on the surface of the axe. Both terminals and in fact the entire surface of the axe or adze has been finely knapped and polished. The narrow terminal has been worked to form a sharp and precise cutting edge; it has b…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy harness pendant of medieval date. The harness pendant is lozenge shaped with a thin rectangular section. A circular suspension loop projects from the upper corner of the pendant. One face is decorated with an incised design of an indeterminable zoomorphic figure, or possibly two entwined beasties. The presence of clawed feet suggest the animal may be a type of bird. Red and blue enamel survives within the decorated field and pick out some of the main details on the design. There is a linear border around the edge of the lozenge shape. The reverse of th…

Object type: AMPULLA
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A very fine example of a cast lead ampulla. Ampullae were an important kind of pilgrim souvenir in the medieval period. They were designed to contain a dose of thaumaturgic water, which would have been given to the pilgrims at the shrines and holy wells (Spencer, 1990 (part 2), p. 86). This example dates to between circa 1350-1530. All of the ampulla survives; apart from one lug which has broken off. The rim has been pinched to seal it. This ampulla is decorated with a relief design. One surface features a six petalled flower within a circle. There are chevrons around the edge o…
