Discussion This type of object, most commonly found in copper alloy, was a multi-purpose implement principally with toilet and cosmetic applications, which included the removal of wax from the outer ear and the extraction of unguents from slender containers.

Inlaid into the glass mass is a copper-alloy, pseudo-cloisonné grid which is clearly imitating garnet cloisonné. Date: 14th - 15th century A fragment of a medieval gold badge or mount, now damaged and incomplete. On one side, a standing robed figure cradling a baby probably represents the Virgin and Child. The reverse side is difficult to interpret, but may represent a vase decorated with a cross, with what may be foliage radiating from it. The edges of the badge are engraved with fluting, and may once have included stitching holes, for attaching to clothing or as a hat badge.

A medieval cast copper-alloy cheekpiece from a bridle of Ward Perkins Type C (c. 14th century). The central element of the object is a D shaped ring. The loop of the D is formed by a circular sectioned bar, which widens at each end and terminates in a square piece of copper alloy. Between these square elements a thinner bar of copper alloy forms the straight back of the D. This part is slightly offset. Type 4 are seen as the standard 'late medieval' form and can be dated from the 14th - 16th century, from contexts (Clarke, p96). The brooch depicts an incised circle, just inside the rim. Inside the circle there is a depiction of some sort of head, the head could be anthropomorphic or it could be zoomorphic, as it seems to resemble an owl-like creature. A cast copper-alloy swivel fitting, this would have formed part of a strap fitting or a chain. The swivel comprises two loops and the swivel mechanism, formed from a shank with a rove at one end. The loops are different sizes, the smallest loop also forms the second rove and has therefore been cast integrally with the shank - it is circular. An incomplete bowl and part of the stem from a clay pipe. Two-thirds of the bowl survives and the stem remains intact and in situ to a length of 38mm. The bowl has been decoratively moulded with the face of a West African slave, below the face - joining the bowl to the stem is a collar. The stem is then undecorated albeit for the markers mark. On one side - inside a pointed rectangular frame is the word C CROP and on the other again in a frame LONDON. These were a novelty pipe used in the 19th century from 1850 onwards.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy key dating to the medieval period. The key comprises a hollow, circular-sectioned stem, which widens towards the bit. The tip is hollow and badly damaged. There is a wide double collar around the stem next to the bow. The bow has broken off. The bit is also badly broken. There is no channel below the stem. The bit is roughly rectangular in shape but badly damaged. Similar to Egan, p113, 313.

A fragment of a cast copper alloy heart shaped chafing dish handle. Chafing dishes were domestic utensils made of metal or earthenware for holding burning charcoal or other combustible material. This was then used to cook food or keep it hot at the table (Lewis, 1973). This particular handle came from a type B1 chafing-dish. This type of dish dates from circa 1450 - 1550. This was then used to cook food or keep it hot at the table (Lewis, 1973). This type of dish dates from circa 1450 - 1550. The vessels themselves were cast in one piece and finished on a lathe. Each vessel would have had two handles. The handle has a striated surface, caused by filing. The handle is rectangular with a square extension at the top, where it would have joined the staple. The edges are chamfered.
