An incomplete late Iron Age -early Roman copper-alloy Colchester brooch with a date range from 25-60AD. The spring of eight turns is secured by passing the external chord under a forward-facing hook which folds down onto the top of the bow. The short wings are relatively flat in section, are wider nearer to the bow and measure 15.3mm in width. The surface of the wings is pitted and so it is not possible to say if there was any decoration. The spring has been badly bent out of position. The bow is plain below this point and is D-shaped in section. The foot is slightly pointed. The catc…

A cast copper alloy, pouring spout from a 15th – 16th century vessel. The spout depicts a dogs head with a pipe in his mouth, acting as the spout. The dog has closed eyes and long, floppy ears. The spout is otherwise undecorated. The break (where the spout has become detached from the vessel) look worn, but the break is a clear break where the two components have parted company. The spout has the characteristic robust construction that survives well in the ground. Similar spout can be seen in Bailey, G. Detector Finds 3. pg 57-8.

The knop is simply the thin tapered terminal of the stem (this has also been bent out of place). The section of the stem is circular. A tiny fragment of the rest of spoon's bowl was found near to the main part of the spoon. It weights only 0.38g. The spoon is a dark jadish-green colour, though it…

Part of the frame has a small notch in the otherwise rounded section of the frame, which appears to be a pin recess, indicating that this object was once a brooch. Spaced around the frame are a number of decorative features. The features alternate between a collar around the frame and a flat, circular disc, which is mounted on top of the frame. A small copper alloy thimble. This artefact has been cast, then turned on a lathe. It has straight sides with a single rim, and a rounded but not overly-rounded top. Finally, it was probably punched with ten rows of dots on the sides, also while on the lathe, judging by the regularity of the dots; there is no ‘seam’ in the spacing of the dots. The end of the thimble has a pattern of punched square dots. This thimble was clearly manufactured. Curiously, its size shows that it was either a toy or a thimble for a child- was this for a workhouse or mill-working child? The regular natur…

The lead part has an outer surface which is dented and marked in the same way as clay; this suggests that clay was involved in the moulding process: it is possible that the mould was made of damp clay, by making the form with a shaped piece of wood, the molten lead then being poured into the hole, and the iron held in place. Gold ring, the narrow hoop of D-shaped section now distorted. The exterior is very worn. Traces of engraved decoration remain: a schematic skull and a pattern of diagonal engraved bands which extend around the hoop. The interior is inscribed in lower case 'My beloved is christ MB Jan 96', expressing the idea of the unity of the couple in Christ, with the skull a constant reminder of death on the exterior. The date 96 appears to refer to 1696. Sometimes inscriptions are contracted and the interpretation not obvious. Others in this vein are 'In Christ and thee my comfort be' and 'May Ch…

Two long cross pennies and a fragment of a long cross penny. These are addenda to a larger find of coins was made on the site in 2002 (2002 T296). The original group consisted of 14 silver coins: 11 groats and half-groats of King Edward III issued in the 1350s plus 3 pennies if Edward I and Edward II. It was normal for older pennies to be in plentiful supply in the mid-14th century, so this group was consistent with the currency of the period. This addenda to the original hoard consists of two silver pennies of the type introduced by Edward I in 1279 and continued until the 1330s…

A silver cut halfpenny of Henry I (AD 1100-1135). A small chip has broken off of the half which survives. The moneyer is Ailward and the type is 'Cross in Quatrefoil' (= BMC 9 and North 865) which would suggest that the mint is Winchester according to North's table

A small rim sherd of medieval pottery, dating between AD 1250 – 1500. The sherd has an extremely high mica content. The body of the vessel appears to have been relatively straight, with the rim proper being only slightly wider and rounded. The sherd is very worn, it is therefore possible that this sherd is part of a manuring scatter.

A silver penny of Stephen AD 1135-1154. This is a substantive type (c. 1135-1141). Due to the fact that there is no inner circle on the obverse, this coin could only have been minted in either: Bedford, Canterbury, Carlisle, Lincoln, London, Norwich, Oxford, Southwark or Warwick. The coin had been bent in half which has left a cracked fold line down the centre of the coin, the coin has been straighten out by the finder.

A silver sceat, Type 30B/8 mule. The obverse is a 'wooden head' type which seem to have been minted in the Ribe area of Denmark. The reverse depicts a standard design, instead of a dragon or (more rarely) two standing figures which one would usually expect to associate with the wooden head types. EMC 2006.0153
