An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas Class B, Type 6, late early-medieval in date (c. 11th century). It is formed from a flat plate of metal, which has broken at one end and terminates at the other with a large stylised zoomorphic head. The style is early-medieval in character, of the Late Viking Age art styles of Ringerike/Urnes. The broken terminal has a hole through it, probably a rivet hole. It is broadly comparable with an example illustrated by Thomas (2003, 5; fig. 2, no. 19).

Description and discussion supplied by Irene Szymanski. Description: Quatrefoil-shaped copper alloy pendant with bent suspension loop. The pendant has a raised border and frame for a lozenge-shaped central cell; within the cell a lion rampant, and within each of the lobes of the quatrefoil a fleur-de-lys. A small amount of red enamel remains within the central cell, and areas of blue enamel beyond it. The lion and fleurs appear to have been originally silvered, along with the frame of the central lozenge and the outer edge of the pendant itself; it is likely that the back was also sil…

An incomplete cast copper alloy strap end. This example fits into Thomas' classification as a class B Type 5.Only the lower half of the strap end survives and the break is an irregular tear across the centre of the object. This has therefore resulted in the loss of the attachment end and the rivets. The lower end is wider in the centre and tapers to the terminal. The terminal is slightly raised and finishes with a zoomorphic head. The head features the ears, eyes, nose and mouth of a creature. The nose is formed from two bands. A cast copper alloy object originally recorded as an unidentified object, but possibly a strap-end of Thomas class E type 3. The object is only a fragment of a larger piece, it is irregularly shaped and has a flat reverse. The front has an incised linear groove, and there are ring and dot motifs either side of the the groove.
If it is indeed a strap-end of Thomas class E type 3, it will date broadly to the 10th century.
