A cast copper alloy swivel fitting, this would have formed part of a strap fitting. The swivel comprises two loops and the swivel mechanism. A large almost circular loop forms the main part of this object. The loop has a diamond shaped section. The area of the loop opposite the swivel proper has worn very thin, perhaps indicating where a leather strap or chain was attached. The constant wear on this area has formed a depression in the interior section of the loop. Cast integrally to the main loop is one component of the swivel. This is formed of a block with a hole through the centre,…

A cast copper alloy strap fitting, with traces of gilding surviving on the surface. The object comprises a square, with an openwork aperture in the centre. The aperture is shaped like a cross with rounded arms. This also gives the square fitting four raised square corners, each decorated with a ring and dot motif. Identification supplied by Jim Halliday. A cast copper alloy openwork, flat backed fragment from a hooked tag or clasp. A complete example was found in Lincolnshire (PAS database No: LIN-79D1C5). The clasp dated from the early 16th Century. It depicts an stylised man facing forwards, all that survives is his torso, decorated with a scroll. There is a possible lion's head/ motif covering his midriff. It terminates with a large (now broken) loop, below two smaller loops. Compare with SUR-D2C7B2 on this database.

A cast copper-alloy swivel fitting, this would have formed part of a strap fitting. This swivel comprises a loop and the swivel mechanism, formed from a shank with a rove at one end and a hook at the other. The loop is highly elaborate with an oval shape and raised pointed lobes on both ends; this is possibly a zoomorphic design. The loop is slightly chamfered. The hook has a squared off section, with a triangular section. The tip has broken off. This swivel is most likely to be a multi-use item. It probably dates for the late medieval to early post-medieval periods. The measurements …

A copper alloy D-shaped loop, with rounded corners. The loop has a circular cross-section. On the centre of the straight edge of the D-shaped there is a rounded loop cast integrally to the larger loop. This collar would have held a cast rod of copper alloy on which this object would have swivelled. The swivel loop is undecorated. The loop itself is complete but has broken off from a much larger fitting. The object is in a good condition, with little evidence of wear. The swivel could have been part of a lead for a pet (ie: dog) but they were also used to suspend cooking pots over a fi…
