An incomplete cast copper alloy mount of early medieval date, probably from horse harness. The mount appears to have been rectangular in plan when whole though now only a small portion remains, it is not possible to ascertain the exact proportion of the loss. It consists of a raised rectangular border within which is a decorated panel. The panel is decorated with a Style I animal motif though only the foot of the beast remains. It is common with Style I decoration that the motifs can be interpretable in a number of ways, especially if turned through 90 degrees, although some may seem …

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy 11th-century object, which could be a fragment of a bridle cheek-piece or mount. The object is asymmetrical and is moulded on the upper surface with an intertwining beast. The breaks are not recent. The design is openwork. The reverse is undecorated. The surface of the object is a matt mid yellowish-green colour. It has traces of a whitish substance pushed into the grooves on the upper surface. The decoration used on these fittings derives from the late Viking Ringerike style, which represents the penultimate phase of late Viking-age art and was used …

Treasure case : 2009 T124 Object Date: 7th century Description: Gold mount Curved gold panel inlaid with garnet cloisonné. A small, gently curving, sub-rectangular tray set inside a cable-twist gold border. Nine garnets on waffered gold foils are inserted into the tray. The back of the mount is plain except for two areas of damage, which are likely to represent previous attachment points. Discussion: It is unclear what kind of object the small mount might have come from. There are numerous possibilities, including large disc brooches (Avent 1975), buckles or sword fittings. Non-destr…

An early-medieval strap junction or strap mount, dating to the 10th - early 12th Century. The object is formed from a quatrefoil shape with a raised moulding in the centre. The moulding appears to represent a stylised face, with very triangular eyes and nose. Each lobe of the quatrefoil is pierced, to allow the mount to be sewn into position. The reverse is undecorated and there is a concave area behind the head. The metal is a mid brownish-red colour, characteristic for metal work dating from the 10th - early 12th Century.

The face has pointed-oval eyes, rounded cheeks, a long, slender triangular nose and a beard, formed from grooves that are engraved diagonally. A moustache featutes lateral protrusions at each side. A cast copper alloy lozenge shaped mount, possibly early-medieval in date.
The mount is formed from a flat, lozenge shaped plate – which is slightly concave on the reverse. In the centre of the reverse there is an attachment lug, which is now broken. One corner of the mount has broken off. The edges of the plate are decorated with incised parallel grooves. These form a border around the entire edge of the plate. The lozenge shape in the centre then has a depressed field, which features a raised wire design. The design comprises a thin border and a cross, with four small circles (one…

A copper-alloy mount, heavily mercury-gilded, with inlaid glass eyes. The mount is in the form of an elongated horned head and is D-shaped in cross-section, with a three-dimensional front and a flat reverse. The head is that of a moustached and bearded man wearing a horned helmet; his face is long and thin, with slightly sunken cheeks.
The helmet has a base made up of a triple raised line. The uppermost line turns to form a triple vertical line up the middle of the helmet to the crown. The horns rise and curve to meet and fuse in predatory birds' heads with curving beaks…

A cast copper alloy gilded circular early Anglo-Saxon horse-harness mount with a zone of Style II animal art decoration, dating to the late 6th to first half of the seventh century. It is likely that this object would have decorated the bridle/breast harness of the horse.
This mount is very similar to one that was found in Ashdon (Essex) PAS database No: FAHG-33D653.
The object has been broken into one large piece and three smaller pieces; they have all been glued back together by the finder. The copper alloy survives in a very good condition as does the gilding which is only eviden…

A cast copper alloy circular mount or possible brooch. Only one third of the object survives. The front surface has been gilded, most of the gilding survives. Tania Dickinson of the University of York has suggested that it is possibly of local Jellinge style. The decoration does not comfortably fit into either Style I or Style II. There is no obvious means of attachment on the reverse of the object, but this could have been removed with the break. It could have attached to a wooden box or horse harness. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The decoration is based on animal art, with s…

A cast copper alloy mount dating to the early medieval period, probably dating from the 7th century. The mount is roughly square (measuring 31.1 x 30.4mm). It has been formed from a very thin piece of copper alloy plate which only measures 1.58mm in thickness.
A raised rim runs around the edge of the mount and an abstract, geometric and stylised design fills the centre of the mount. The design is seen in high relief. The decoration appears to represent the tail end of Salin, from the Anglo-Saxon art style known as Style I. Style I dates from the 6th century, it could perhaps be St…

A cast copper alloy Winchester style mount. The object is tongue shaped and decorated in relief. One end has broken off: the break is worn and there is an iron rivet through the opposite end. The reverse is concave. It is not possible to see the decoration clearly due to the worn and incomplete nature of the object, however this mount is similar in shape and design to the Winchester style strap ends figured by Biddle page 499, ref 1059 and probably dates to the 10th- 11th century.
