An incomplete cast copper alloy Trumpet brooch of Roman date. The head, bow, acanthus moulding, catchplate and foot all survive, but the pin mechanism and pin no longer remain. From the reverse of the head the loop which would have held the pin mechanism can be seen. The head is wide and trumpet shaped and is decorated with an incised ring around the edge. From the head the upper bow extends terminating with three very worn collars. Below the collar is a crude acanthus decoration followed by a second set of triple collars. Extending down from the lower collar is the D-shaped sectioned …

A cast copper alloy knop, possibly from a brooch. Due to the fact the knop is the only surviving piece, it is not possible to date it. The knop has a circular, flat terminal, which is joined to a spherical central piece. The outer surface of the sphere is coated in corroded iron, suggesting that it was joined to a larger item at this junction. The metal is slightly pitted and is a mid greyish-green colour.

Both terminals survive, both culminates in circular knops, with a waisted area just before the knop. The pin has been lost and there is no sign of a pin recess. The brooch itself is a light mid brownish-green in colour and has a pitted surface. Similar examples can be seen in Hattatt, p.339.

Terminal from a copper-alloy penannular brooch of early-medieval date and Irish origin. A short length of the curved frame survives, with a D-shaped cross-section, and there is a thickening where this joins the terminal. The terminal is sub-triangular and decorated with a shallow cast relief design. The fragment is corroded so that it is hard to see the details of the design, but it appears to be formed around a sunken lozenge shape within an oval frame with D-shaped cells around the edge of this frame, two above and one below. The edges appear either wavy or incomplete; all edges …

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon (or Anglian) cruciform brooch. The fragment comprises part of the head plate and one knob, probably the top knob. The head plate has been badly damaged but retains its broadly rectangular shape. There is a raised central panel which is edged on either side with punchmarks, probably annulets. The surviving knob is half-round with a flat-topped basal moulding decorated with two fine grooves, and a further fine groove at the base of the rounded terminal. The moulding and terminal are divided by a broad groove. The metal has a mid reddis…

A fragment of a cruciform brooch of early-medieval date. The fragment is the projecting knop either from the wing or top of the head of a cruciform brooch. From what would be the front of the brooch the knop appears bulbous with a rounded terminal. Opposite this point the knop narrows before extending into a double collar. From the reverse however the knop is flat. The break is well worn and features slot, this slot is filled with corroded iron, this iron pin would have held the knop onto the brooch head. The metal is a dark brownish-green colour and is worn. A similar example can …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Knee brooch dating from the 2nd century AD. The brooch is in a T-shape comprising the horizontal wings and a high arched bow. The head has a triangular section, with a raised horizontal ridge across the front. There is a worn stump on the top of the head, which would have represented the head loop. The reverse of the head is concave, as this would have held the spring mechanism. Neither the spring mechanism or the pin survives. The high arched bow is wide and gently tapers to the rounded foot. A fragment of a cast copper alloy Bow-and-fantail brooch of Roman date. The brooch is broken at the bow resulting in the loss of the head, hinge and pin. All that survives in the lower bow, fantail and the catchplate. The lower bow is wide and rounded and the break is very worn. It extends into the fantail which is triangular in shape, giving the object its 'fantail' title. The fantail is decorated with a moulded, raised semi-circle with inward folding, curling ends and topped by a lozenge shape. The decoration shows the influence of Iron Age designs. A cast copper alloy pin, probably from a Roman brooch. The brooch has a tapering, circular shaft, which terminals in a bent point. The opposite terminal has a circular eye, with a flattened section. This would have fitted onto an axis bar of a brooch, allowing the pin to hinge. The pin survives in a good condition with a light greyish-green patina.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Thealby brooch of Roman date. The Thealby type is a variant which derived from the earlier Headstud form. The head, wing and part of the bow are all that remains. The pin, foot and most of the catchplate no longer survive. At the apex of the head there is a sunken trough, filled with corroded iron. This could be the remains of a chain or similar item, which held the brooch in place, although the axis bar also seems to be made of iron. A cast lead-alloy brooch of early-medieval date and nummular type, probably dating from the 9th-11th centuries. The brooch is circular in shape, with a wide flat border. The central area is raised to create a stepped-up inner section, which is also circular and flat. This area is hollow on the reverse. The rim of the brooch is decorated with a continuous run of small inward pointing lines. Adjacent to this are a series of raised triangles, each one pointing to the edge of the brooch. A fragment of a cast copper alloy object, possibly a detachable knob from a radiate-headed brooch, of early Anglo-Saxon date. The fragment is sub-square or D-shaped when seen from above; it is a moulded animal-head terminal comprised of bulbous protrusions for the eyes, raised circular scrolls or spirals representing nostrils, and ridges with incised lines to denote the curve of the brow and nose. Above the brow, the edge of the object is straight and the corners are right-angled. The object is also a low D shape in cross-section, with a flat undecorated reverse. At the straight e…
