Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A ovate biface, cordate type Lower Palaeolthic handaxe, from the Middle Achalean period dated to circa 250 000 year BP. It is a large handaxe which has a trimmed butt and is straight sided, the point has been broken off recently. It has soft-hammer reduction. The patination is similar in colour to another flint of this date which was found in the Ouse valley. This flint has not been highly finished, although it does have evidence of re-working. There is a flaw in the flint where probably the frost has started to scatter it.

A flint scraper possibly Neolithic, possibly Bronze Age. The scraper has been heavily worked and retouched to form two cutting edges. On the reverse of the flint a small bulb of percussion still survives and several ripples extend down from it. On the other side of the flint it is evident that previous flakes have been removed from the surface of this flake, before this flake was removed from the core. The two cutting (or scraping) edges are parallel to each other along the longest length of the flake. These edges show some evidence of retouch but both sides are extremely worn. The fli…

A Mesolithic flint core. This core has been formed as a result of flint knapping, in order to produce blades and small projectiles. The core has an almost flat reverse (ventral face) with ripples radiating away from the area where the bulb of percussion should be. The bulb of percussion has been removed by a further flake, which has been removed. The dorsal face has had many small blades like flake removed from it, which has reduced the core to the size it is. The striking platform is also still evident and it is clear that a certain degree of platform preparation has taken place. Due …

A collection of five worked flints. Four of the flints are simply waste flints which have been produced when a flint knapper struck off the initial flakes from a core in order to make a tool. One of the flints appears to be an incomplete tool. Top row (left – right). 1) This incomplete flint tool weighs 15.7g. Both the dorsal and the ventral surfaces of this flint have had many flakes previously removed from it. There is also some evidence of retouch along the cutting edges of the flint. The tool has not been finished. The flint looks worn and abraded. The cutting edges are no lo…

A flint scraper probably Neolithic in date (c. 4500-1500 BC). On the dorsal surface of the flint many previously flakes have been removed. However, 10% of the flint is still covered with cortex. The left edge (where the cortex is) has not been reworked. The right edge has been reworked to form what would have been a sharp edge. This edge appears to have been worked in such a way to make the scraper into a thumb scraper. But the work remains largely unfinished. The striking platform and the bulb of percussion have both been removed by later flaking. The ventral surface is unworked but t…

A collection of 26 flint working fragments known as ‘debitage’, weighing a total of 497g. All of the fragments date roughly from c.2500-600 BC and are therefore largely Bronze Age in date, a slightly earlier/later date can not be ruled out, since these fragments are only debitage and not finished tools. Four of the largest fragments of flint have had a number of flakes removed from their surface. They remain however as fairly undiagnostic fragments. 13 of the fragments are simply undiagnostic flakes of varying size and shape. One of these flakes also happens to be fire cracked. One…

A small, crudely made Barbed and Tanged arrowhead. The arrowhead has been knapped out of flint. The arrowhead has been bifacially worked into an arrowhead shape, with a sharp point, and straight, sharp edges. It has a flaw in the flint, which has lead to a large flake to be lost on one side. The arrowhead weighs: 3.18g. This type of arrowhead dates to the Bronze Age (c. 2500-1500).

A small burin or borer, made of black flint. Most of the surfaces have the beginnings of a grey patina, still shiny; however, the apparent later removal of some flakes around the grip, and an apparent line of retouch down one side of the point, have exposed the black flint beneath. Since it can take a considerable length of time for the grey patina to form, this suggests a long period between the original making of the piece and its retouching and reuse. This line of retouching also suggests that the piece was somewhat larger in its original form. The piece has been made by the process…

Microliths, made from flint. They have all been knapped, using larger blade blanks or flakes, which have then been ‘cut’ into smaller pieces, by precisions blows. The pieces consist of two blade ends, four sections of blades, and one flake: this latter may simply be a waste flake, although its almost regular shape shows that it could have been mounted on a tool or weapon. The two blade ends, both triangular show no signs of retouching. The same can be said of three of the blade fragments, one of which is rectangular, and the other two sub-rectangular. Although one of the latter p…

7 worked flints: These have all been knapped from high-quality flint: 1, 3, 5 and 6 are all black flint. 2 ad 7 are light grey, and 4 is grey. 1) 38.11mm by 30.28mm, by 5.66mm, and weighing 7.38g. It is a sub-rectangular flake that has been struck from a core. The most right-angled corner is also the bulb of percussion. One of the edges leading from this corner is totally straight, and has been made so by a line of minute pressure flake-scars. This piece is totally pristine apart from small amounts of mud in the creases of the flint, which suggest that it was created very recently- t…

A long, and very narrow blade flake, of fine black flint. The flake is fairly straight; one end has secondary flaking and was the striking-point. The other end is a clean break. The dorsal face has three long facets, along with the retouching at one end. This is a very skilfully struck blade, but it appears not to have been used, as it has no wear or damage. This item dates to between the Upper Palaeolithic and the Neolithic.

A flint flake; this is a waste flake from a Levallois core. There is a bit of cortex on the dorsal surface, and the scars of three parallel preparation flakes. There is a bulb of percussion at one end of the ventral face. The other end is a break suggesting that this is a waste blade flake.

A battered, but almost complete Neolithic flint axe or adze. The artefact was made by knapping to rough out the shape, and then grinding, to produce a smooth surface. It is possible that some areas were also pecked prior to grinding, as the ground surface in one place near the butt-end is quite rough with small pock-marks; however, this may just be due to rough grinding. The axe appears to have been fairly roughly made, as the grinding has smoothed but failed to remove many of the original roughing-out flake scars. The axe has the typical shape, with curving sides that meet at the butt…

A polished flint axe or adze. The artefact has been made by initial knapping to rough out the shape, then grinding to produce a smooth surface. This axe is complete, though there is evidence reflaking, post polishing. The axe is roughly tear-drop shaped, without the pointed tip. Both ends of the axe are well rounded. The axe slightly tapers from the butt end, the axe is therefore wedge-shaped and oval in section. Approximately 80% of the original surface has been removed by the later reflaking. The reflaking does not appear to have affected the chamfered edges of the axe. The whole art…

Three worked waste flint flakes, dating from the Mesolithic to Bronze Age. The flakes are too small (and relatively unworked) to be diagnostic. One flake weighs 24.8g, the second weighs 12.5g and the third only 10.3g. All three flakes have a large percentage of the natural cortex surviving on the surface of the flint.
