A rim sherd of wheelmade Roman pottery. The rim has an external diameter of 11cm and an internal diameter of 9cm. Approximately just over 10% of the rim survives. The rim proper is wide and well rounded and slightly hooked over at the terminal of the rim proper. Striations can be seen on the underside of the rim proper. On the internal surface of the rim there is an incised circle, which is about 3.3mm wide. The vessel has been tempered with shell ranging in size from < 1mm to > 5mm. This type of pottery dates to the later Roman period, circa 3rd - 4th Century.

The neck and mouth from a stoneware jug (fired at such a high temperature that the clay becomes very hard and fully water proof). The mouth is circular with a triple mouth moulding. There are two thin collars in-between the second and the third mouldings. The remains of a handle can be seen broken off from the side of the neck. The jug from which this sherd came was probably made in Germany in the region of the Rhineland and imported. This sort of jug is probably 17th Century in date, and would have been used to import liquid. The mottled surface is produced by throwing salt into the k…

A seal from a stoneware jug (fired at such a high temperature that the clay becomes very hard and fully water proof). The seal is oval, with a double border, with a series of lines joining them together. The design is of a flower, with semi-circular design and a pellet in between each set of petals. The jug was probably made in germany in the region of the Rhineland and imported. This sort of jug is probably 17th Century in date, and would have been used to import liquid. The mottled surface is produced by throwing salt into the kiln, so these jugs are often described as 'salt glazed…

A base sherd of Roman Samian ware. This sherd is a footring from a bowl or cup, as it has a convex shape which is standard for the internal surface of the bottom of Samian ware vessel. The rest of the vessel has broken off. There is a markers stamp on the inside of the bowl. The stamp however does not appear to have been completely pressed into the clay, so it is difficult to read who the marker was. A number of Samian forms had foot rings, however, it is most likely to be from a form 37 (curving sides) or perhaps form 30 (straight vertical sides).
