Nummus of Constantine the Great (AD 306-337). The reverse depicts Jupiter and dates the coin to AD 321-324. Although much of the mintmark (below the exergual line) is missing, it was almost certainly minted at Nicomedia. The remainder of the mintmark (in the right-hand field) reads X II mu (the symbol is often interpreted as a Greek mu - indicating half). The significance of 12 1/2 is linked to the presumed valuation of the earlier nummus at 25 denarii. It is thought that the value of the nummus was halved at this time (AD 321-324).
