Copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams Class A, Type 11A, depicting a lion in high relief, in profile. The object is very heavily corroded and much of the original surface has been lost, therefore little detail on the lion can be seen. A small piece of the main body of the mount has broken off. The mount is basically triangular; with a pierced circular apex. The lion is enclosed in an undecorated border to either side and across the base. Along the base there are two rivet holes, no rivets survive. On the reverse there is a right-angled flange which does not run the whole width …

A cast copper-alloy ansate brooch, with an arched back with an equally sized fan-shaped terminal on either end. The arched back of the brooch is decorated with three prominent ridges. Below the terminals there is a catchplate on one side and a double lug on the other. The remains of an iron pin can also been seen, but is heavily corroded. Ansate brooches are in origin a Frankish type, used in France from the 7th century onwards. They do not appear in England until the 8th century, and they appear to go out of use in the 10th century.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A short, bi-conical perforated lead weight, with a flat top and base. The hole which runs through the centre of the weight has a circular section. These weighs are not yet completely understood. It is possible they could have been spindle whorls dating from the medieval period or later, but due to a lack of excavated examples and lack of context this weight must remain undated. The weight is decorated with a prominent central rib and raised triangles; there are pellets in alternate fields in one hemisphere and pellts in every field in the other hemisphere. The weight is complete. The …

An 11th century cheekpiece strap fitting - a bit link. The strap fitting has been cast in copper alloy. The object has a lozenge shaped loop, with a circular aperture. At 12 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 9 o'clock, around the loop there are three well-rounded circular knops. In the 3 o'clock position there is a thick bar of copper alloy (with a D-shaped section). This bar widens with a rounded swelling and then extends to form a circular loop. This loop is now broken, possible due to having been worn thin. The reverse of the artefact is flat, therefore giving the bar and the loop their D-shaped…
