A copper-alloy seal matrix for the Cloth Subsidy of the County of Essex. From the late 13th century to the 15th century. Inscription: S'SUBSIDII PANNORUM IN COMT ESSE Central motif: Kings Head.(or crowned leopard's head?) The seal will most likely have had a wooden handle, which in now missing. Comments by John Cherry: There are a number of these seals in the British Museum's collections (Tonnochy 1954 nos 29, 30, 31, 32, 33 and 52; these correspond to Egan 1995 nos. 1, 46. 56, 44, 104 and 45). A cast copper-alloy Roman seal box lid. The fragment comprises the sub-circular lid and the hinged loop which has been cast integrally to the reverse of the lid, at a 90 degree angle. It is square and pierced. The lid is flat, with abrasions to the edges; this has resulted in a lot of the edge detailing being worn away. There is a punched border, formed from a series of punched dots. In the centre of the lid there is a cross, also formed from punched dots. The four arms of the cross terminate with three dots in a row. The metal is corroded with a dark brownish-green colour.

A cast lead alloy button, the button has a rounded top and a flat reverse. It has a central pellet, with two concentric rings around it. Around this are a series of incised triangles, which point outwards. There is a rim around the edge of the button. On the reverse there are two bent over stumps, which would once have formed the loop. It is possible that the incised triangles held enamel but none can be seen in situ.

Identification supplied by Jim Halliday: A Pilgrims Ampulla of the 13th to the early 16th century AD. These small holy water containers were acquired by pilgrims visiting the many holy shrines of the period. These ampullae contained Holy Water or blessed water from the local springs, the said waters were thought at the time to be a cure for all illness and misfortunes. For instance, the blessed water poured onto the farm land was thought to ensure a good crop, a sick animal anointed with this blessed water may be cured and thrive. A cast copper alloy double looped buckle frame. The strap bar is intact. There is a pin recess on one frame. The buckle frame is complete, the pin is missing. The buckle is a mid reddish-brown colour and the surface is pitted. These buckles date from circa 1350 - 1700. Parallels for this type of buckle can be seen in Whitehead, 2003, p54.

An incomplete cast copper alloy pendant suspension mount. The mount is formed from a rectangular plate, with a shallow open hooked loop at one terminal. Half of the plate is flat. The opposite terminal has a rounded terminal proper with a lobed extension and it is pierced. Just before the plate bends there is another hole. The plate has then been bent at a 45° angle, before the loop begins. This object is medieval in date and would have held a harness pendant. It is a dark reddish-brown colour and heavily pitted.

The shaft appears to be circular in section and appears to narrow slightly. The surface of the pin is dark reddish-brown in colour. The surface and the break appears to be fairly worn. The pin is incomplete. This pin dates to the early-medieval period. The head measures 10.9mm in width.

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman Headstud brooch dating from the 2nd Century AD. Behind the head the tubular spring / pin mechanism survives in place, complete with an iron axis bar. The pin is missing. The head is angular and the wings have been decorated with two vertical incised lines, projecting out of the top of the head is a broken loop. The upper bow is sub-rectangular in section. There is a raised rounded stud on the arch of the bow. The lower bow tapers to the foot and foot proper and catchplate have broken off. Similar to Hattatt, p332-3. Fig: 191-2.

An early Anglo-Saxon copper alloy small-long brooch, dating to the 6th Century. The brooch has a trapezoidal head, which is very damaged and corroded around the edges. The corroded remains of the lug can be seen. The brooch has a high arch, with some incised decoration. The lower part of the bow is lozenge shaped and flat. The foot and catchplate have broken off. Only the stump of the catchplate remains. Similar to an example in Hattatt, p376, Fig: 235.

A silver droplet of metalworking waste of the Anglo-Scandinavian period. Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the droplet of 92%, the remainder being gold with small amounts of copper and lead; it weighs 1.13 grams. The droplet represents a fragment of metalworking debris; length, 9 mm. It is most likely associated with other material evidence for silver and bronze working on the site, which was occupied by a Viking camp during 872/73, although a 10th-century or slightly later date is equally possible.
