An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap slide, dating to between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. The front face of the slide consists of an oval plate with raised and pinched pointed ends. The points have shallow arrises and there is a large dominant design in the centre. The design features a large incised circle, with a raised circle inside that. The circle then features a chip-carved design of a cross, which is raised. The cells around the arms of the cross would once have been enamelled but this has now been lost. But traces can still be seen which indicate that the quarte…

Projecting out from the reverse is the rectangular loop of the strap slide. The metal is a light brownish-green mottled colour and is pitted. This strap slide is similar to others that have been found in Yorkshire and the North-east. It survives in a very good condition.

A copper alloy decorative strap fitting which most probably dates to the Late Iron Age. It is however also possibly that this object dates to the medieval period. If the strap fitting is Iron Age it would fit within the Type 4 category. This object could be a strap-slide. The object is shaped like a quatrefoil, comprising four circular openwork loop joined in the centre by a solid plate of copper alloy. The object appears to have been cast as one piece. The central plate has been decoratively shaped and so a lobe projects into each openwork loop. In between where the loops are jo…

A copper alloy strap fitting, which could be from either a belt loop, a personal strap fitting, bridle fitting or non-load bearing harness fitting. This decorative fitting most probably dates to the Late Iron Age. It is however also possibly that this object dates to a later period. It is formed of a figure of eight loop with a third loop set at 90 degrees between the two. The three loops appear to have been wrought together by a bronze smith, rather than being cast as one piece. The three loops were probably made individually and then soldered together. The joins would then have …
