An incomplete cast copper alloy object dating from the late Iron Age to early Roman period, possibly a button and loop fastener or a slide strap. The object comprises a plate of copper alloy with a wide rim on the front, with a central circular motif, with a raised cross formed from uprights of copper alloy. These lines therefore create four quadrant cells each one has been infilled with enamel. Two opposite quadrants are a mid orangey-yellow enamel, alternated with a duller mid reddish-orange. On the reverse of the rim are two parallel raised scars, which appear to be break scars, fr…

An incomplete cast copper alloy button and loop fastener, of Wild's Classification type II 'Ring-headed fasteners'. The loop survives intact. It is a circular loop, with a long and wide shank, which bends to join the head. There is a shallow incised groove down the reverse of the shank. The head is broken, and only a fragment survives. It would once have been a circle. At the junction where the shank meets the head are two parallel pronounced vertical ridges. The button element, the head, has broken off either side of these ridges. The breaks are worn. Button and loop fasteners are …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy button and loop fastener. The fastener is of a type classified by Wild as a Class VI b fastener with a solid square-head.The reverse is flat and has the loop extending out from the back of the head. The loop is formed from a projecting strip of copper alloy, which has a right-angle bend just behind the head, the strip then forks open and would have formed a triangular loop. The loop has broken and the breaks are worn. The entire surface is slightly pitted, but much of the original surface survives. The original metal is a dark greyish-brown colour.

A Roman copper-alloy button-and-loop fastener. This example does not easily fit into one of Wild's classifications, but is nearest to class VI a, fasteners with enamelled, rectangular heads. The button element of the fastener is formed from a square plate, decorated with an incised groove, which runs around the edge. There is a raised cross in the centre, with four sunken cells. This would have been enamelled but the enamel does not survive. Attached to the reverse of the plate are two plate lugs, one is broken. These are pierced to hold a pin or ring fitting. Wild suggests that button…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy button and loop fastener. The fastener is of a type classified by Wild as a Class VI b fastener with a solid square-head. The loop is formed from a projecting strip of copper alloy, which has a right-angle bend just behind the head, the strip then forks open and would have formed a triangular loop. Possible a Late Iron Age to Early Roman copper-alloy button-and-loop fastener. The fastener is rather unusual and does not appear to fit into the normal classification and a detailed search through the literature has not found a parallel. The object consists of a circular loop (possibly the button element); this is now broken and only half survives. Coming off from this at a right angle there is a raised triangular plate, with a triangular hole cut into it. Below this again at a right-angle two strips extend down joining the top plate to a lower semi-circular plate. The loop and the s…

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy button and loop fastener. The fastener is of a type classified by Wild as a Class IV fastener with a solid boss-head. The head is circular and boss like, but it is undecorated. The reverse is slightly concave and the loop extends out from the back of the head. The loop is formed from a projecting strip of copper alloy, which has a right-angle bend just behind the head, the strip then forks open and would have formed a triangular loop. A complete and highly elaborate copper alloy button and loop fastener. The fastener is of a type not classified by Wild. The fitting comprises an oval slightly pointed loop, which is joined to the rest of the artefact via a circular knop which sits inside the loop. The loop has a slightly chamfered edge. The knop and loop are then connected to a shank, which projects out at a right angle out of the back of the loop. The shank tapers outwards slightly to the strap loop. The strap loop is rectangular on the front with decorative raised edges. The reverse of the strap fitting element is …

A late Iron Age, Romano-British button and loop fastener. The fastener has been cast in copper alloy. A similar fastener has been recorded onto the PAS database, under database record number SF-E503E7. This fastener is similar to Wild Class 1, with a solid double-boss head and heavy ring-loop (Wild 1970, 137-139, fig I no I). The whole fastener measures 22.7mm in length (which is similar to SF-E503E7 which measures 22mm. Unlike the other examples only the double boss part of the fitting survives; as the loop has broken off, leaving behind a small worn stump on the flat reverse of the …

A complete cast copper alloy (Iron Age bronze) looped toggle, dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. The toggle survives in an excellent condition. The object has been cast in one piece. The toggle is shaped rather like the head of a hammer-head shark. That is to say the main body of the toggle is cylindrical and either end has been capped by a circular rove. In the centre of the main body of the toggle there is a raised step or ‘block’ in the copper alloy equal in diameter to the roves. The circumference of the roves has been decorated with an engraved single li…
