Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy late early-medieval probable strap-end, possibly of Thomas's Class H. The surviving terminal of the object is lozenge shaped, with the plate extending from the top point of the lozenge. The break is very worn and broken. There are rounded lobes extending out from in between each angle of the lozenge. An incised cross in saltire has been engraved onto the object's front, formed of parallel lines, with further linear decoration inside the borders in the form of transverse fillets. The object is a light reddish-brown colour. The reverse of the strap-end is…

Copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams Class A, Type 11A, depicting a lion in high relief, in profile. The object is very heavily corroded and much of the original surface has been lost, therefore little detail on the lion can be seen. The mount is basically triangular; with a pierced trefoil apex. The lion is enclosed in an undecorated border to either side and across the base. Along the base there are two rivet holes, very close together, no rivets survive. On the reverse there is a right-angled flange which does not run the whole width of the base. The mount is 30.4 mm wide a…

An 11th century cheekpiece strap fitting - a bit link. The strap fitting has been cast in copper alloy. The object has a lozenge shaped loop, with a circular aperture. At 12 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 9 o'clock, around the loop there are three well-rounded circular knops. In the 3 o'clock position there is a thick bar of copper alloy (with a D-shaped section). This bar widens with a rounded swelling and then extends to form a circular loop. This loop is now broken, possible due to having been worn thin. The reverse of the artefact is flat, therefore giving the bar and the loop their D-shaped…

Fragment, comprising part of the head-plate and upper half of the bow, of a cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon great square-headed brooch. The surviving part of the head-plate has a rectangular inner panel bearing scrolled decoration. The bow is divided longitudinally into two panels bearing zoomorphic ornament. The stumps of a pair of cast perforated lugs are present on the back of the head-plate; the iron spring/pin mechanism would have been attached to these. Some iron corrosion is present on the reverse around these lugs and probably represents the remains of the spring/pin. The head-p…

A broken terminal from a piece of 11th century horse furniture. The terminal has been cast in copper alloy. It is likely that this terminal was the decorative terminal from an 11th century cheek piece, but it could equally be from another piece of horse furniture of the same date. The object has a looped circular ‘terminal’ (with a D-shaped section). At 12 o’clock, 9 o’clock, 6 o’clock, around the loop there are three well-rounded circular knops. In the 3 o’clock position there is a thick bar of copper alloy (with a D-shaped section). This projection is broken at the end wh…

A corroded and incomplete stirrup terminal of late Early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) to early medieval date (11th Century). The function of stirrup terminals is discussed by David Williams, in his book "Late Saxon stirrup-strap mounts" (1997; p6-7) and Williams 'Stirrup terminals' Finds Research Group 700-1700, Datasheet 24, 1997. The object fits within a type of terminal with trilobite terminals of a foot-like form. The object is triangular in shape, with a hollow cylindrical opening on the reverse, into which the iron stirrup would have been situated. The front surface is rounded and ext…

A corroded and incomplete fragment, possibly from a stirrup terminal of late Early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) to early medieval date (11th Century). The function of stirrup terminals is discussed by David Williams, in his book "Late Saxon stirrup-strap mounts" (1997; pp. 6-7). For a complete example of this artefact type, see PAS record no. BH-C560D2. The object takes the form of half a (horizontally split) cylinder. The upper surface has two moulded collars, after which it has broken at both end, resulting in the loss of the terminal. On the underside is an applied substance - seeming…

A cast copper alloy Anglo-Scandinavian cheek piece fragment, dating to the 11th century. The object has been cast in one piece. The fitting comprises a D-sectioned strip of copper alloy, with a broken ring at either end. The breaks are all very worn and corroded. There is a prominent umbonate knop in the centre of the object, it is otherwise undecorated. The metal is heavily corroded and worn. The metal is a patchy mid reddish-brown colour, typical of 11th century metal work found in this part of Sussex. The corrosion has eaten away much of the original surface. The object is definitel…
