An incomplete copper alloy early Anglo-Saxon supporting arm brooch with a wide rectangular head. This is decorated with a raised rim along the top, a pair of incised parallel lines across the centre, and another pair of parallel lines at the junction of head and bow. On the reverse of the head, each end has a pierced lug which projects backwards, creating a box shape to house the pin mechanism. The end of the copper-alloy axis bar survives in one lug, but the rest of the pin mechanism is missing. The head tapers to the bow, which is arched, thin and wide; it is D-shaped in cross-secti…

A cast copper-alloy strap end of 11th-century date. The object is rectangular with a main rectangular plate. The plate has a split end to hold the strap. The opposite end of the plate has a raised circular-section edge with two long, parallel extensions or bars coming out of it to join the split end; it would appear that two further outer bars forming the sides of the strap-end have worn throu…

A small incomplete lead plaque, now broken. It has a straight edge at the top, but the other edges are curved so that it is U shaped. The front is decorated with incised decoration forming runes. There is a line across the front, about two-thirds of the way down, and then above that four vertically incised lines forming rectangular panels. The two to the left feature incised saltires, forming what look very like runes (compare NMS-BBC400). The third rectangular panel is empty, and then the fourth contains two sideways-on triangles looking like a b rune. John Hines has seen t…

A cast copper alloy circular mount or possible brooch. Only one third of the object survives. The front surface has been gilded, most of the gilding survives. Tania Dickinson of the University of York has suggested that it is possibly of local Jellinge style. The decoration does not comfortably fit into either Style I or Style II. There is no obvious means of attachment on the reverse of the object, but this could have been removed with the break. It could have attached to a wooden box or horse harness. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The decoration is based on animal art, with s…

A small, silver Anglo-Saxon strap end with a zoomorphic head. Two silver rivets remain in situ. The strap end is small but quite substantial and well-balanced. The central panel is sub-triangular in shape, thickening in height but tapering in width towards the zoomorphic head, which is separated from it by a plain collar band. The field of the central panel is decorated by a V-shaped groove departing from the centre of the collar band and ending just below the rivets in two tiny wedge shapes, probably intended to be zoomorphic. In these 'heads' and in the top end of the grooves is inl…

Treasure case No: 2004 T484 Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the ingot fragment of 91%; it weighs 17.14 grams. The fragment has been cut, possibly with a chisel, from one end of a blunt-ended, bar-shaped ingot of rounded trapezoidal section; length, 20 mm; width, 11 mm. It would have been cast in a simple, open-topped mould cut in soft stone, or possibly drawn in the earth. There appear to be a few worn nicks, or testing marks, made probably with the point of a knife in one of the top edges; there are also scratch marks…

Treasure case : 2006 T426 This case concerns a silver penny in the name of Cynethryth, wife of Offa, king of Mercia (757-96). Under the terms of Treasure Act (1996), a single coin would not normally constitute Treasure. However, the coin comes from the same site as a hoard of coins found between 1991 and 1997. Two parcels of this hoard were declared to be Treasure Trove, and this coin would therefore count as Treasure as an addendum to the earlier hoard, as long as it can be established that the coin does come from the same hoard. Another find of Anglo-Saxon coins from the same site i…
