Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An Anglo-Saxon or Anglian strap end (Thomas classification possibly class B due to the shape and length, difficult to determine type because of lack of surviving decoration). The strap end has been made from a single piece of copper alloy. The attachment end is wide with a rectangular section, but it is broken. The attachment end proper no longer survives, as it is damaged and worn. The main body is narrow and tapers to a point. The terminal proper is triangular. The reverse is undecorated. The metal is a mid reddish-brown colour. The piece dates from the 9th - 10th century.

The pinhead is a polyhedral type, which are cube or cuboid shaped with the corners cut off. The shaft has a circular section. It is impossible to say how long the shaft was or whether is was a straight shaft, or an L-shaped shaft. The pin is otherwise in a good condition. The metal is a mid greyish-green colour.

Ten small droplets/lumps of copper alloy metal working debris, or possibly molten metal from a cremation. All have been severly fire damaged and so the objects which they originally comprised cannot be identified. All ten were found together suggesting that they could possibly mark the site of a cremation burial, though this cannot be definately confirmed as no pottery was found associated with them. The fragments range is length from 9.5mm to 21.6mm. All ten are highly pitted and erroded. The metal of each fragment is a mid greenish-brown.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas Class B, Type 6, late early-medieval in date (c. 11th century). It is formed from a flat plate of metal, which has broken at one end and terminates at the other with a large stylised zoomorphic head. The style is early-medieval in character, of the Late Viking Age art styles of Ringerike/Urnes. The broken terminal has a hole through it, probably a rivet hole. It is broadly comparable with an example illustrated by Thomas (2003, 5; fig. 2, no. 19).

A cast copper alloy strap end. This example fits into Thomas' classification as a Type A . The strap end is damaged and badly corroded. This has therefore resulted in the loss of the attachment end, but the broken rivet holes can still be seen and it is a split type. The lower end is wider in the centre and tapers to the terminal. The front surface is decorated with incised lines. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The metal is a mid greyish-green colour; it is pitted and corroded. This strap end dates from the late 8th - 10th century.
