Object type: FLANGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy axehead of the mid-late Bronze Age. The axe is experiencing active corrosion and has a mid greenish-brown, pitted patina. This axehead was found as a single, isolated find. This piece was probably made circa 1500-1150 BC. The artefact is sub-rectangular in plan, the width expanding slightly towards the end of the blade, but tapers towards the butt end. The blade tips measure 30.9mm, while the butt end measures 21.1mm. The blade is flat and rather featureless, but two large flanges overhang each face, these are curved and very prominent. The axhead has no central st…

Object type: FLANGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An early-mid Bronze Age flat axehead. The axe was found as a single find. The axe is cast in copper alloy; the original surface survives in a good condition and is only slightly pitted. The axe has a thin and rounded butt, measuring 20.8mm wide and the terminal measures only 2.3mm thick. The butt measures approximately 48.1mm in length, it is very flat in comparison to other examples. There is a slightly raised area in the centre of the axe, which appears to be an early form on the central block, seen on the later palstaves. The thickness of this central area measures 12.7mm. The sides…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast copper alloy spearhead probably dating from the later Middle Bronze Age, about 1400 – 1125 BC. The fragment comes from the tip end and all that survives is the tip proper. The spearhead seems to have been very long and thin judging by the angles of the two sides. The midrib is raised, forming a lozenge section and it is solid. There are two ridges either side of the midrib, parallel to it, but tapering to the point. Whilst little remains of the spearhead, the slimness of the blade and the ancillary ridges suggest that it might belong to the basal looped categ…

A badly worn, damaged and corrodedearly Bronze Age flat axehead. The axe was found as a single find. The axe is cast in copper alloy, but the original surface no longer survives and is heavily pitted. The butt end of the axe has broken off, resulting in an irregular break. The broken central block measures 12.1mm x 38.1mm. The sides of theaxe are rounded and it is not possible to see the flanged crest. The main body of the axe tapers into the blade proper. The lower blade is asymetical and badly damaged. The blade tips are also damaged and well worn. There is no decoration visibleon th…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy spearhead dating from the Middle or Late Bronze Age, about 1550 – 800 BC. The fragment comes from the tip end and all that survives is the tip proper. The spearhead seems to have been very long and thin judging by the angles of the two sides. The midrib is very shallow, forming a lozenge section and is solid, but a hollow central section can been seen where the break occurred. This could suggest that it was just the tip that was solid. The blade edges are eroded, and the whole artefact is worn, with a pitted surface, which is light greyish-green. An…

A cast copper-alloy 'moustache-like' object. This is a three-dimensional casting consisting of two, drop-shaped parts on either side of a central constriction. The constricted area is rectangular and hollow. The drop-shaped parts have elongated narrow tips with abrupt angular terminals, these may be incomplete but appear rounded so could be complete. The metal is pitted and a dark blackish-green colour, with a high sheen. An example in 'The Salisbury Hoard' (Stead 1998) suggests an Iron Age or earlier date. There is another example from Mildenhall (see PAS database No: SF-9183). …

An almost complete Middle Bronze Age unlooped palstave, dating to circa 1400-1150 BC. The palstave is in a poor condition, but most of the elements survive, despite the high level of pitting and corrosion on the surface. The butt end is damaged, measuring 21.8mm in width. The septum is defined and the flanges on either side are still evident. The flange facets are not so clear. There does not appear to be a ‘stop’ in the centre, as the septum simply continues becoming the blade. This area measures 24.4mm x 13.5mm. The blade is relatively straight and parallel in form, as the blad…

TREASURE CASE : 2007 T295 The pre-conservation state of the palstaves meant that the clayey soil adhering to the surfaces may have obscured more detailed typological features. However, given their heavily corroded condition this is unlikely. Unfortunately, this does mean that the weights of the objects include the adhering soil. Description of objects 1. Palstave. Light green coloured with heavy corrosion and chipping. It has a damaged butt, worn flanges and potentially the remains of a broken loop. There is no decoration evident. The narrow blade and apparent shape of …

A fragment of a late Bronze Age, socketed axe dating from 1150 - 800 BC. The axe was found as a single find. The axe fragment survives in a poor condition and much of the well-finished original surface has been lost. The mouth of the socket is experiencing some active corrosion; bronze disease is affecting the metal and is producing a light green powder. There are also some areas of heavy wear on the faces of the axe. The axe has a large mouth-moulding, with a secondary smaller mouth-moulding below. The loop has been removed with the break.

28 sherds of handmade Bronze Age to Early Iron Age pottery, weighing in total 338g. The sherds are mainly body sherds, but one large rim sherd does survive. It has an inverted rim. The pottery is undecorated. It has chalk tempering, which has largely leached out, therefore resulting in the production of lots of holes in the matrix of the clay. The pottery is a coarse ware, which has been lightly fired in a clamp fire, rather than a kiln.
