Short length of rod originally of circular section of about 5 mm diameter. Both ends have been hammered, cut and finally torn. The hammer facets taper back and almost meet in the middle. The thinned blunter ends have steep 'cut' facets and are partly rough-fractured. The undamaged parts of the sides have slight longitudinal facets and fine striations from the original finishing. Such a small and undiagnostic fragment cannot be identified definitively. However, all the features, including the mode of fragmentation and the metal composition are consistent with this being part of a Bro…

A Late Bronze Age, gold penannular ring. The penannular ring has a roughly oval cross-section, the inner surface being flattened. The terminals are flat. The ring has alternate stripes of yellow and paler gold; this decorative banding has been considerably worn on each face and on the angles of the flattened inner surface. Examination of the surfaces of the terminals indicates that the piece probably comprises a gold wrapping over a core of different material; in such cases this is frequently copper alloy. The presence of a base metal core was subsequently confirmed in the laboratory.…

A fragment of a mid-late Bronze Age ?chisel. At the broken end the section is rectangular (22.8 x 10.6mm). The blade edges are missing due to corrosion and much of the surface patination is missing from one face and both sides. The edge expands slightly due to re-working. There are faint curving striations on both faces close to the blade edge from the re-sharpening of the blade. Dark patina, where it is intact. The face with much of the patina intact, it also slightly dented.

A collection of seven sherds of pottery, ranging in date from the Late Bronze Age to the 14th century AD. All of the sherds are small and abraded, suggesting that they have been deposited during manuring activities. 1) One small sherd of (possibly) Late Bronze Age to mid Iron Age pottery, fairly undiagnostic. The vessel represented has flint tempering. With numerous large fragments of fire fractured angular flint inclusions, 4mm - 1mm. The outer surface is oxidised. Weight: 8.5g. 2) A small rim sherd of grog tempered ware, probably Romano-British 'East Sussex Ware', again fairl…

A small bronze bead, dating from the Bronze Age. The bead is almost circular though crudely made. There is a hole in the centre of the bead, though which the string would have past. The hole is slightly off centre. Both surfaces of the bead have been chamfered so they both slope downwards to form a triangular edge, rather than a flat edge. Some of the original surface has been removed and some pitting has occurred. The metal has a dark brownish-green patina, which is largely still smooth and has an almost polished appearance.

A cast copper-alloy object, probably a bead, dating from the Bronze Age or Early Iron Age. The artefact is lozenge-shaped. Each corner has a large rounded knop. The knops are irregular in shape. Each side of the lozenge has been made up of a circular-sectioned strip of copper alloy, which has been slightly flattened. The artefact appears to have been cast as one piece and then worked and shaped. There is a (roughly) square hole in the centre of the lozenge, which looks as though it has been formed by later working of the metal after the initial casting process has taken place. There …

The metal has a dark brownish-green patina, which is still smooth and has a highly polished appearance. The smoothness of the surface is only spoilt by some scars from the original cast.

A small, crudely made Barbed and Tanged arrowhead. The arrowhead has been knapped out of flint. The arrowhead has been bifacially worked into an arrowhead shape, with a sharp point, and straight, sharp edges. It has a flaw in the flint, which has lead to a large flake to be lost on one side. The arrowhead weighs: 3.18g. This type of arrowhead dates to the Bronze Age (c. 2500-1500).

An incomplete small axe or more likely an axe-chisel, cast from copper alloy. The surviving portion is wedge shaped, with rectangular faces which are almost straight when seen from the side, and that meet to form a curving blade edge that appears to have had little secondary bevel. The sides, when looking at the face, are slightly concave along the length, curving outwards to the blade. The middle of the blade edge has broken off in the past, but appears once to have a narrow curve of maybe 120°, with no flaring of the tips; the rounded tips are 19.31m apart. The hollow interior is co…

There is a hole through the centre of the bead, which measures 8.67mm. The exterior of the bead has been decorated with spiralling grooves and ridges, almost like rifling marks. The grooves are quite deep. The metal has a smooth dark brownish-green patina, which has a highly polished appearance. The smoothness of the surface is only spoilt by some loss of surface.

TREASURE CASE 2005 T421 A rare gold pendant, dating to the Midle Bronze Age. Biconical pendant made using narrow, c-sectioned gold strip wound spirally. The piece tapers to each end, having its maximum diameter across the mid-section. One end is broken off (missing) and there is slight compression at this end. An eyelet for suspension is placed centrally at the thickest part and this appears to be of the same c-sectioned strip. The hollow pendant was plugged with dirt at the time of inspection. Penannular gold ring having narrow stripes of yellow and paler gold, this decorative effect very worn especially around each face. The paler (more silver-rich) stripes have blackish tarnish. Visible green corrosion products, and its light weight, suggest that the ring is one of those comprising a gold covering over a copper alloy core (tested: see scientific report). External diameter 29-27mm; breadth 7.5mm; internal diameter 5.6mm; weight 11.6 grams. Composition The analysis says that the gold bands on the ring are 75-77% gold, 19-21% silver and 4-6% copper, with the paler bands t…

A small fragment of a Middle-Late Bronze Age socketed axe, with only part of the blade end surviving. The axe has flanges on both faces; these are too corroded for much detail to survive. The blade edge expands slightly to the blade tips. No cast lines are evident. The original surface metal has a dark brownish-green patina, but the object is largely a light greyish-green colour – due to the corrosion. The surface of the axe is heavily corroded and pitted, so very little detail survives and much of the axes shape has been lost. The break looks accidental rather than deliberate.
