A medieval copper-alloy padlock case. The case has a hexagonal section and the lowest face is decorated with a punched sinuous line with shorter lengths of straight line in each curve. From one end rises a rectangular tabe which is pierced by a circular hole. The upper bar which runs from this tab is incomplete.

A Roman copper-alloy lion-headed box mount. The mount is circular and hollow-backed and has a projecting head and nose. The flat nose is pierced by a ragged hole to take an iron stud. Whiskers on the nose are delineated by curving lines and similar radiating lines define the mane. The eyes are formed by pits with curving lines above and below.
Mounts or studs in the form of lion's heads are well know. They would have originally be attached to decorative wooden cremation caskets, such as examples noted in Essex (ESS-1AAD74) and at Skeleton Green (Partridge, 1981: pp. 312-316). Their…
