Description:A late medieval (15th century) gold posy finger ring with an inscription which reads, in black letter: x cest mon desir (this is my wish). The ring is slightly distorted, but complete. The three words are spaced equally around the band and sit within lentoid expansions of two narrow ribs which encircle the ring. Between the words the spaces between the ribs and the rim of the ring are infilled with a diagonal grid. The words themselves may originally have been displayed within fields of enamel, perhaps red. Traces of enamel appear to survive against the keyed bac…

Object type: RIBBON
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A parcel of folded gold strips or ribbons of probable Bronze Age date. The parcel appears to comprise two separate strips of differing lengths. The shorter has been folded once and the longer has six folds. The shorter fragment has a rounded terminal with a raised edge and measures 8.91mm in width. There are no signs of additional decoration. Discussion: This may be a ribbon form bracelet or similar adornment which has been scrapped and folded for remelting. Dimensions: Length 9.6mmmm; width 8.91mm; weight 1.18g.

Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete Late Bronze Age gold-plated penannular ring with a near-circular cross section. Damage on one of the terminals shows that the ring has been plated but the nature of the core is unclear (although it is likely to be copper alloy on the ground of known comparanda). There is no sign of banding in differential shades of gold, this being a common form of decoration on similar rings. Dimensions: Diameter 13.9mm; thickness 4.2mm; weight 2.77g.

A fragment of an ingot of light brown/yellow gold. The fragment has a rounded rectangular section and bears many hammering facets, mainly on the slightly convex upper face. There are a number of facetted hollows, particularly on the lower, concave surface, perhaps from its being held in a vice. Both broken ends are left rough. Such objects are difficult to date. And wide date range of Iron Age to early medieval seems reasonable.

A length of gold ribbon, apparently complete. Both long sides taper gradually towards a rounded terminal which is now hooked over. The corners of the opposite end are both bent over and flattened. Multiple transverse ridges suggest that the ribbon has been folded multiply at some point in its life and then rolled flat again. No ornament is present. Dimensions: Length 44.84mm; width 11.12mm; weight 1.83g. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis undertaken by the Science department at the British Museum indicated a surface composition of approximately 89-92% gold, 7-10% silve…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete gold finger-ring of late Early-Medieval date. The ring is composed of two plain circular-sectioned rods twisted together with two finer beaded wires which are twisted in between, resulting in alternating plain and beaded bands. The rods taper in diameter towards their ends which are hammered together to form a flattened join. The join is expanded and bears a decoration of four annular stamps. This ring is of a late Viking type dating to the 10th and 11th centuries, and possibly into the early 12th century in Scandinavia. Similar rings recorded under the Treasure A…

A gold finger ring, now much damaged and distorted, with three settings for missing stones. The central setting is rectangular and those on either side are circular. The sides of each setting are fluted and one of these hollows retains white enamel. The upper parts of the slender band bear foliate decoration. This is a characteristic type of the later 17th century and early 18th century (cf eg PAS-8DFDD7 which bears white enamel and three green stones). Several comparable examples are held by the British Museum. In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious met…

A gold finger ring, now distorted and slightly damaged. The band is narrow and plain and bears the following legend within: Content is a treasure. The ring bears a maker's mark which reads TB. The form of the letters in the maker's mark strongly suggests that the ring was made by Robert Timbrell and Benjamin Bentley. The mark is recorded by Jackson (1964) on a saucepan dating to 1714-15. The inscription is also recorded on gold rings ESS-BC20F6 and DEV-785123.

A short section of a flat, rectangular-sectioned gold ingot, trapezoidal in plan. Shows clear evidence of having been chiselled at both of the narrow ends. This object bears some similarity to small flat ingots used in the Viking period, and often broken up for the purposes of trade. However, the form is undiagnostic, and it could also date to an earlier or later period.

A complete, rounded droplet of gold or gold alloy, probably casting waste. The droplet is relatively smooth, with a porous, unworked surface. It measures 8.6mm long, 7.6mm wide and 5.4mm thick, and weighs 3.3g. Conclusion: An Iron Age date is possible for this object, since five Iron Age gold coins, all quarter staters and mostly from the mid-first century BC, have been found in surrounding fields (SUR-4EF070, SUR-95F112, SUR-F84295, SUR-960B33, SUR-BC0D8C). However, the undiagnostic nature of the pellet itself means that it cannot be securely dated as over 300 years old. As suc…

A fragment of gold sheet apparently decorated with repousse ornament. The fragment is an irregular, three-sided shape and has probably been cut down. One edge is curved, one straight and one now jagged with a notch missing. The surface appears to be decorated with a repousse design which can no longer be deciphered with certainty, except for some curved lines and dots. This object is too fragmentary to identify and date with full confidence. Objects made from and decorated with repousse gold sheet are known from the early Anglo-Saxon period, which could offer a potential broad dating.…

A post medieval gold signet ring, complete and undistorted and bearing no marks. The circular bezel has a cabled frame in which is a floral spray. The spray comprises a branching stem with leaves, buds, and a single cinquefoil flower. The ring probably dates to c1500-c1625. Similar signet rings have been submitted as Treasure although these mainly bear designs of a more armorial nature. BH-A7461E bears a swan; GLO-48E9C8 bears a griffin; and GLO-240F91 is a mourning ring.

A complete late medieval gold finger ring of iconographic type. The ring is only slightly distorted and has small nicks of probable recent origin along the edges of the band. The bezel is keeled and the dividing ridge runs part way around the band. On either side of the bezel is a rectilinear panel containing an image of a saint. On the right the image appears to be of Mary facing right and perhaps holding the Christ child, but the identification of the left-facing figure on the left is unclear. Beyond these panels are pairs of foliate scrolls with bods and trefoil flowers. Medieval …
