Fragment of Romano-British ‘Colchester’ type brooch. The wings of the brooch are semicylindrical and complete. They are decorated to either side of the head with a pair of raised vertical lines. Behind the head of the brooch would have been the double lug to hold the spring coil. The upper lug is entirely missing and the lower lug survives but is heavily corroded. The lug and one wing hold the corroded remains of one half of the spring coil, which appears to have six coils (so possibly twelve when complete). Incomplete copper alloy, one piece ‘Colchester’ type late Iron Age to early Roman brooch. One wing of the brooch is complete, the other is truncated. The forward facing hook is truncated and worn. Behind the head of the brooch the short backward hook is entirely missing, as is the integral pin coil and shaft. The bow is sub circular in section. It is complete and ends in a blunt point. A lead plug or pot mend for a ceramic vessel. On one side is a flat irregular sub oval surface, measuring 20.1mm by 15.18mm. On the other side is a smaller oval plug 16.84mm by 11.44mm. The two plugs are joined by an integral irregular ‘neck’ making the object 11.16mm long. The object weighs 10.30g. Sandwiched between the two plugs is a fragment of the original ceramic vessel. This has a black core that is clearly shell tempered. Dr Paul Sealey kindly suggested that this would date the vessel to the 4th century. Cast copper alloy Roman strap slide. The main body of the strap slide is spade shaped in plan (as in the card suit) in that it is tri-lobed with a short triangular shank between the two lower lobes. It is flat in section. The front and reverse are both plain. To the reverse of the strap slide is the integral rectangular loop to accommodate the strap. The plate portion of the fitting is 19.54mm long, 18.44mm wide and 1mm thick. The loop is 16.22mm wide and 9.78mm high. The object weighs 3.20g. The object has an abraded mid green patina.
