Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire

Cast lead weight, probably of Viking date. The object has been cast in one piece and takes the form of a flattened sphere. Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Three lead-alloy rings, all 21-22 mm in diameter. All have roughly circular or oval cross-sections; two are more chunky, about 3.5 mm in cross-section, and one is slimmer, 2-2.5 mm in cross-section. Lead-alloy rings of the chunky shape, but only 15 mm in diameter, are identified by Egan and Pritchard, Dress accessories, as early 15th-century shoe-buckles (1991, 62-4). Lead alloy is not strong, and so may not be suitable for other heavier uses. Probably 1400-1450AD.

Fragment of lead alloy with partial, inked or painted inscription. The fragment is flat and subrectangular and clearly broken along three edges. The inscription reads L [ ] over AURATUM, suggesting that it is referring to something gold or with a gold element. It is possibly a tag to some form of goods. The letter forms are not Roman and the use of ink or paint, which is fairly fresh looking, suggests it is post medieval to modern in date. The lead is creamy white in colour. The object is 38.54mm long, 22.78mm wide, 1.96mm thick and weighs 2g.

County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast lead alloy seal. This seal is circular in plan. It has a moulded, raised border to each side and a circular perforation for suspension or attachment at one edge. The perforation has a border to one side, which suggests it is deliberate, rather than a later addition. One side has the moulded, raised letters T with N T below, whilst the other possibly has N P N, though the letterform is not clear. Given the relatively good condition of the object, and the fact that it is hand made, it is probably post medieval in date. Its function was probably as a seal of quality, or other such com…
