Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast lead weight, probably of Viking date. The object has been cast in one piece and takes the form of a flattened sphere. One flat face has a shallow circular depression, whilst the other is damaged and it is impossible to tell whether there is deliberate markings (though it also seems to have a depression). The object is 13.92mm high, 20.82mm in diameter and weighs 33.67g. It is abraded and is mid grey in colour. A similar weight has been reported from Hertfordshire as BH-C5E266. Here Kevin Leahy postulates the Viking period date as the object is similar to approximately 150 weights …

Late Medieval or Post-medieval cast lead alloy lid from a weight box or something similar. The lid is circular in plan and flat in section. It is 59.09mm in diameter, 2.94mm thick and weighs 66.21g. The top of the lid is decorated with a raised, moulded design. It takes the form of the shield of Tudor England (the lions of England quartered with the lis of France) set within a circular border that is then subdivided into squares with an alternating pattern of crosshatching and āSā shapes (some reversed). The reverse or underside of the lid is plain. A small knop to one point of the…

Cast copper alloy mount, possibly a ninth century sword pommel cap. The mount is pyramidical in shape, being lozenge shaped in plan and triangular in section. It is made with thin walls and is hollow. It is plain except for a pair of parallel incised lines that run vertically to the centre of either side of the object to the blunt point. Otherwise it has a brown patina with small patches of green corrosion product to the edge and points of abrasion. The rear of the pommel shows a whitish material encrusted in at the pointed end, currently unidentified without further testing. The pomme…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Published
Unidentified cast copper alloy object. This object consists of a shaft that is semicircular in section, being domed with a flat reverse. The main body of the shaft is broken at one end, and though the break edge is not fresh, is not worn smooth, suggesting damage occurred in the more recent past. The surviving portion of shaft is moulded with two integral collars, about 6mm apart, with a smaller integral collar moulded halfway between. Beyond the final collar is an integral terminal, which is essentially subrectangular in plan, with rounded corners and which is wasted. This gives it th…

Fragment of Roman copper alloy crossbow brooch. This fragment represents the bow of the brooch. It is missing the crossbow wings, the hinged spring mechanism and the pin, and any decorative knobs. The surviving bow is C shaped in profile and V shaped in section, having bevelled sides with a concave reverse. Towards the top end of the bow is an integrally moulded rectangular band that is decorated with two pairs of horizontal lines to the bottom and top edge. The front face of the band, where it has detached from the wings of the brooch, is formed from a curved wavy line. The opposite e…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete copper alloy Romano-British trumpet brooch. The trumpet head of this brooch is entirely missing, as is the spring and pin. The top of the brooch now begins with the short portion of bow that would have extended from beneath the narrow end of the trumpet head and which joins at the opposite end to the acanthus moulding. This portion is worn, but appears to have had at least one raised moulded line. The acanthus moulding is domed and decorated with a grooved curved X which divides the dome into a sub-lozenge field to either side and a tongue shaped field above and below. The r…

The ring has a diameter of 15.08mm, is 6.3mm thick and weighs 8.11g. The perforation has an internal diameter of 8.94mm. Rings are difficult to date. The object recorded here is regular and appears to be more of a fitting …

Cast copper alloy bead or ring. The bead is circular in plan and subtriangular in section having a slightly bevelled side to both upper and lower faces of the bead. There is no evidence of a casting seem and the bead is irregular in shape. It has a circular perforation. Most of the original surface is missing, but a small patch survives with an even mid green patina. Exposed surfaces are fractionally lighter and heavily abraded. The bead has a diameter of 16.38mm, is 8.34mm thick and weighs 8.11g. Beads are difficult to date, but the condition and patination of this object suggest it m…

Unidentified copper alloy fragment. This fragment is Y shaped in plan. It is formed from a subcircular shaft, now truncated, that is decorated with two integrally moulded collars, set 2mm apart. Each collar is moulded with diagonally incised lines giving it a rope effect. Extending from just above the upper most collar are two divergent arms, giving the object its Y plan. The arms are subcircular in section and end in a sub bi-foliate terminal. The terminals are worn, but appear complete. Just above the upper collar, between the arms, is a triangular knop, 2mm high. The object is abrad…

Incomplete copper alloy bowl escutcheon. This object takes the form of a curved bar with sub-circular section. Either end of the bar is damaged and tapered. One tapered end, though worn, seems complete, whilst the other, though also tapered, is clearly truncated. Half way along the object is an integral, upright, sub-circular loop, which also curves in line with the bar. It is damaged and the top portion of the loop is missing. Towards one end of the bar is a rivet- like knop, though it is not certain what function it performed. The object is abraded and pitted. The original surface, w…
