Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete wire copper alloy bow brooch with short bilateral spring, coiled into 5 loops on a central, solid copper alloy axial rod, which holds the spring together. The chord seems to be missing but it could only have been attached to one end of the spring as the other end is in the centre, next to the central coil which extends to form part of the bow. The bow is broken and bent at an angle from subsequent damage, so the original curvature cannot be made out. The foot, pin and catchplate are missing. The surface of the brooch is corroded and pitted so that the recorder cannot determi…

Incomplete cast copper alloy quatrefoil horse harness pendant decorated with a scallop shell filled with the remains of red enamel. The scallop shell is a symbol of St. James and pilgrimage generally. Griffiths in Clark (2004) illustrates a similar enamelled example on page 66, Fig.49, No.66, which is dated to the 14th century. Read (2001) illustrates a similar enamelled example on page 56, Fig.35, No.445, which is dated to the 14th century.

Object type: DRESS FASTENER (DRESS)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy dress hook fastener with openwork decoration consisting of three fleurets surrounding central six-pointed star, encompassed by a twisted, rope-like border. Within this border are two knops, one at each end of the rectangular fastening loop above, where it meets the border. The aperture would have been used to attach the dress hook to a loop of fabric, looped around the bar, or the bar could have been directly sewn onto the material. Bailey (2004) illustrates similar examples on page 95, Figs.12.9 & 12.10, which are dated from the 16th to the 17th century.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Single sheet copper alloy tongue-shaped strap-end, folded lengthways and tapering to a fleur de lis knop at its terminal. The folded side of the strap-end has split open from the middle to the upper attachment edge. There is one rivet hole just below the attachment edge with the rivet still extant, attaching the two ends of the strap-end together. The surfaces of the strap-end are quite scratched, but one face appears to have some crude decoration of diagonal lines with some cross-hatching towards the terminal end. Egan (2002) illustrates similar examples on page 131, Nos.605 & 606, w…

The ribs extend down about three quarters of the length of the body of the axe head, and the central rib is more pronounced and appears to be the longest.
