Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy knife handle with a bird head finial and a pattern of tears or drops of blood running down the body of the tang. The tears are recessed and defined by rows of linear impressed ovals and dots, which give the surface a texture. The surface is now quite corroded but was probably once lacquered. These tear-shaped motifs are often used in heraldic contexts, and the knife may have been more ornamental, rather than functional, and possibly part of a marriage pair, with a matching handle for the other spouse (Geoff Egan pers comm). Griffiths, Philpott and Egan (2007) illus…

Cast copper alloy hexagonal coin weight for the Spanish gold double excellente. "The hexagonal shape suggests that it was made in Paris, but the lowercase letter 'y' on the obverse would suggest that it is Spanish and might even be 14th century. The weight now weighs 5.68 grams, but it may have lost some mass, and if it was originally around 6 grams that would make it a weight for a double excellente" (Paul Withers pers comm). There are some silver coins, the real and the blanca del agnus dei, with the letter Y on them, issued by Juan I (1379-1390). The double excellente was introduce…

Pottery body sherd from an S-profile beaker decorated with a single twisted cord impressed in a chevron pattern on the beaker's exterior surface. The single twisted cord is more unusual on beakers, which are often comb impressed, but locally it is part of a tradition that continues throughout the Bronze Age, and is commonly seen on Trevisker ware. The fabric is a uniform light orange throughout with a slightly reduced interior surface and is likely to be made of gabbroic clay from the Lizard as it has light felspar, dark augite and quartzite inclusions. Cordoned rim sherd from a large jar of Roman date (c. 100-300 AD) with a rolled rim and larger applied cordon, immediately beneath it, with a groove between to define the cordons. The sherd is a bright orangey colour throughout and the surfaces have been oxidised. The fabric contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. The clay may have been made more iron-rich in order for the jar to look more like the terracotta colour of the Roman imports at the time. Romano-British in form. Carlyon (1987) illustrates …

Incomplete cast copper alloy sword belt fitting or baldric ring, circular in profile and D-shaped in section, having a slightly flatter inner edge. The outer surface of the ring or hoop is inlaid with red glass triangles, arranged in a pattern pointing inwards from the edge, so that the alternating copper alloy spaces are triangular or diamond-shaped. The glass is the so called 'sealing wax' glass of the Iron Age, called thus because of the opaque deep red colour. It is technically known as enamel when in fact it is chips of glass inlay. The glass has undergone SEM analysis with Mary …

Fragment of a cast copper alloy socketed axe head of South Wales/Stogursey type. It consists of the moulding at the mouth of the socket and the upper edges of the ribs on the body. The side loop and rest of the mouth and body are missing. The thick moulded collar with a moulded raised parellel ridge below it and multiple ribs, coming off at right angles from the ridge, suggest that this is a Llyn Fawr or Sompting-type axe. The moulding is sub-square in plan, curving at one edge, at the begining of one corner. There are 4 ends of the ribs present, suggesting that the whole face of the …

Possibly a brass dupondius, 1st or 2nd century AD, as it was found in association with other Roman coins, but the edges are not corroded as they usually are for this date, and the coin looks potentially milled to the recorder.

Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Aesica-variant brooch with a central disc on the bow and the remains of a fantail beneath it. On the back of this broken and truncated fantail is the top edge of the catchplate. The disc on the middle section of the bow has a central, circular setting with a stud still extant on the back of it. There are also fan-shaped recessed sections emanating out from the central setting, which may have originally held enamel in separate fields. The remains of the crossbar show that is was a hollow tube for the axis, on which the pin is hinged. The axis and the …

Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 5, Group 1.b2, The Trumpet Knop, flat wing ends), missing its spring, pin, catchplate and footknob. The head has a beaded crest with plain flanges either side of the head, and moulded oblique lines on the front of each side of the crossbar. Below the crest, the bow tapers towards the foot with moulded cross-grooves and a pair of cross-ribs surrounding a central moulding. The bow is then undecorated beneath this element and the upper edge of the catchplate is just visible, although dama…

Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman hinged T-shaped brooch with the remains of some red and yellow enamelled decoration. The enamel is set into a panel of alternating triangular and lozenge shapes running the length of the bow on the upper face. This type and pattern of decoration is similar to Hull's 'Sawfish' brooches, but the sides of the bow do not now have these projections and it is narrower than this type, but consistent with other examples of T-shaped brooches. Half way down the back of the bow are the remains of the attachment edge of the catchplate, and the footknob is plain a…

Flint single-platform micro-blade core, oval in plan, sub-rectangular in section and semi-circular in profile, with a deep hinge fracture at the base. All faces around the circumference of the core show the scars from the flake removal for producing microliths, from the layer of cortex at the distal end to the ridged and stepped proximal end. The flint is a mottled grey to brown colour with white speckles and its colour and curvature suggest that has probably come from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is about 1:1, which is usual for micro cores. Bond (2004) illu…
