Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint plano-convex pointed knife, lozenge-shaped in plan, semi-circular in profile and triangular in section. Both the lateral margins and the distal and the proximal ends are worked on the dorsal face. These are finely retouched with what appears to be pressure flaking. The remains of surface gloss on the right edge of the dorsal face of the knife shows that it was used against organic matter.
The flint is a mottled light grey to translucent brown colour and could therefore be made from local flint sources. The length to breadth ratio is a bit more than 3:1.

Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Five flint single-platform micro-cores found together in a scatter, circular in plan, sub-rectangular in section and semi-circular in profile. The cores have had blades taken off them on two thirds of the way around its central axis, with a layer of cortex generally running from the edge of the platform down to the base of the core on the remaining third section.
The flint is a mottled pale to mid-grey colour and the curvature of the core suggests that it was made from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is almost 1:1 in most cases, which is usual for micro-cores.

Greenstone (epidiorite or dolerite) whetstone or muller with two worked edges, probably used to polish metal, although the base may also have been used as a rubbing stone, to grind grain.
The muller is sub-oval in plan, with one rounded end and one flat, where the edge is slightly damaged. The stone is sub-triangular in section, flat on the side that was used for rubbing, and also worked on the other two oblique faces, where it was used instead as a base for polishing metal implements. The muller base would have been used with a larger saddle quern to grind grain between the stones …

Cast copper alloy pin from an annular ring brooch with a hook and two incised grooves on the rectangular transverse ridge below the hook. There is wear on the inside of the pointed pin end where it would have rested on the edge of the brooch ring.
Hattatt (2000) illustrates a similar example on page 382, Fig.241, No.699, which is dated from the 13th century to the 15th century.

Object type: BUCKLE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper-alloy buckle frame, triangular in plan and semi-circular in cross-section, with a flat reverse. The frame may have originally been D-shaped, like the comparanda below, and been bent into this new form.
At the apex of each of the points of the triangle, there is a sub-triangular animal head terminal with circular eye sockets which may have originally been settings for a stone. One of the three terminals is missing, but would probably have looked the same.
The frame is chamfered on the outer edge, but still leaving a flat upper surface which is ornamented with a zig-za…

Fragment of the bowl and part of the stem of a silver teaspoon. These are referred to as 'picture-backed' teaspoons, as the back of the bowls are decorated, and are typical of the mid-18th century. This one has moulded floral decoration in the form of foliage that is spreading up onto the back of the bowl from the curved support for the bowl at the end of the stem.
Moore (2005) illustrates two similar examples on page 25 and 27, which are dated to c.1750-1760, and to c.1750 respectively.

Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete hammered sheet copper alloy 'skep' (like a straw beehive) thimble, circular in plan and conical in profile. The thimble is punched with vertical, concentric and random small circular indentations above two incised lines around the base, as a border. The thimble has been damaged at its most weak spot, the plain, 'tonsure' (bald spot!) crown, where there is now a hole. The size of this example suggests that it might have been used by a child.
Read (1988) illustrates two similar examples on page 76, Nos.429-430, which are dated to the 14th century.

Incomplete cast copper alloy purse bar, missing one side arm and its suspension loop above the central square-shaped block. The central block is drilled and would have fitted the swivelling neck of the loop. The block has the letter 'A' incised and then filled in niello on its front face, and the letter 'W' on its back face, presumably the initials of the owner. The side arm is also decorated with niello lattice work or cross hatching around the circumference of the arm. There is a moulded, stylised, zoomorphic head to either side of the central block, gripping the side arms, which ar…
