Cordoned rim sherd from a large jar of Roman date (c. 100-300 AD) with a rolled rim and larger applied cordon, immediately beneath it, with a groove between to define the cordons. The sherd is a bright orangey colour throughout and the surfaces have been oxidised. The fabric contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. The clay may have been made more iron-rich in order for the jar to look more like the terracotta colour of the Roman imports at the time. Romano-British in form. Carlyon (1987) illustrates …

Incomplete cast copper alloy receptacle leg, probably from a cauldron, with a pronounced central rib tapering to a worn 'hoof' foot with no collar. The foot is slightly flared in its width and rounded at its base. Butler and Green (2003) illustrate a similar example of Mid Wales Type on page 139, Fig.2, No.8, and another on page 166, Fig.1, which are both dated to the 16th century. Read (1988) illustrates a similar example on page 95, No.591, which is dated from the 13th to the 17th century.

Cast copper alloy receptacle leg, rectangular in plan and lozenge-shaped in section, with a central mid-rib on one side. The foot end also has a rounded, broken extension, perhaps a tapered 'toe', or perhaps it was mis-cast. The foot end of the leg thickens to 48 mm and the broken top end, which would have attached to the body of the vessel, is 37 mm thick. This large leg probably came from a cauldron. Read (1988) illustrates a similar example of a receptacle legs on page 95, No. 588, which is dated from the 13th to the 17th century. Butler and Green (2003) illustrate a Westcountry ca…

Incomplete cast copper alloy cauldron leg, sub-rectangular in plan and semi-circular in profile and section with five equal lobes in an arc, which extend to five ribs. The broken edge on one side would have originally extended to the body of the vessel, probably a cauldron, due to the size and robustness of this leg, and the other end would have expanded to the full width of a claw foot. Butler and Green (2003) illustrate two cauldron legs on pages 144-5, Nos.149-150 which are dated to the early 17th century. Read (1988) illustrates a similar leg on page 95, Nos.587, which is dated fr…

Rim fragment of a cast copper alloy vessel, probably a shallow cooking bowl, with internally bevelled rim and a suggested diameter of about 220 mm. The rim is 39 mm long and 8 mm deep and 3 mm thick and the fragment is about 32 mm long and 2 mm thick just below the rim. Ottaway & Rogers (2002) illustrate a similar cast bowl with bevelled rim on page 2810, Fig.1394, No.14197, which is dated from the mid-15th to the early 17th century.

Pottery body sherd decorated with incised oblique lines within curved chevrons, running obliquely under a border made up of three parallel incised lines. The border runs the circumference of the shoulder of the vessel, which is probably a typical Iron Age jar, S-shaped in profile. The surface has also been burnished slightly. The fabric looks like it is probably made from gabbroic clay, as there are light felspar inclusions and dark augite inclusions. The colour of the clay has been oxidised on the exterior to a light orange colour and the interior is slightly more buff to light bro…

Pottery rim sherd, un-decorated, from a simple open Iron Age jar with an upright neck. The sherd tapers towards the body from the rim, suggesting that the vessel was hand-made and built up of coils, where the thickness would vary from base to rim. The fabric looks like it is probably made from gabbroic clay, as there are medium to fine crushed light felspar inclusions and dark augite inclusions. The colour of the clay has been oxidised throughout from the exterior to interior to a light orange colour. This pot sherd may be associated with another (CORN-5A7104) that was found near…

Cast copper alloy vessel with two looped handles on either side of the neck of the container. The vessel is globular in shape with a rounded base and a defined narrower neck. The vessel could not have stood on a flat surface so would have been suspended so as not to lose its contents. One handle is more worn than the other, suggesting that the vessel was probably suspended from this side. These vessels were used to contain holy oil (Geoff Egan pers comm). There are several of these copper-alloy vessels from across England on the PAS database now, the most significant one, i…

Sheet copper alloy rim or edge of a vessel, sub-rectangular in plan and flat in profile, with a slight curvature to the outer edge. The fragment consists of one long flat section of sheet held together to two broken sections by four sub-circular rivets, about 10 mm in diameter. The longer section was probably used to repair the broken rim and the rivets have been hammered in from this side, suggesting that this face was the upper face and therefore visible and improved. Cast copper alloy receptacle leg, probably from a posnet, missing its foot. The leg is triangular in plan and semi-circular in section, with a central rib running the length of the leg. The attachment end is broken and the break seems to have some burnt or melted material on the surface, suggesting that it might have been re-soldered on to the body of the skillet in an attempt to repair it in antiquity. Part of the rim is broken and the surface of the vessel has patches where it is covered in fossilised marine organisms, as it has been underwater from some time, and probably originates from a wrecked ship. Fragment of cast copper alloy receptacle leg, probably from a cauldron, rectangular in plan and profile and plano-convex in section. Two pottery body sherds that fit together to form part of the side of a jar. The sherds have a brown interior and core and an orangey exterior. The fabric contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. The larger body sherd measures 56 mm long by 36 mm wide by 10 mm thick, and the smaller 36 mm long by 47 mm wide by 9 mm thick, which is probably closer to the rim of the vessel.
