Cast copper alloy everted flat and flanged foot, triangular in plan and profile, with a hollowed base and internal chamfered edge, probably from a cauldron. Read (1988) illustrates a similar example on page 96, No.600, which is dated from the 13th to the 17th century. Butler and Green (2003) illustrate a cauldron with everted feet on page 166, Fig.1, which is dated froom the 15th to the 16th century. Egan (1998) illustrates a similar example with a solid plano-convex foot at right angles to the leg on page 164, Fig.132, No.457, which is dated to c.1350-1400.

Cast copper alloy leg of cauldron with defined moulded mid-rib running vertically from the damaged indent of the foot to the top of the broken leg, flanked by two recessed vertical ridges. There are also three parallel vertical ribs on each side of the leg. The leg has an everted flat and flanged foot that is triangular in section. The base of the foot has evidence of molten lumps, when it was heated in the fire, dragged and then cooled. Similar legs have been found in East Devon, Cornwall and Lancashire, but not attached to dateable cauldrons, though they can generally be attributed …

Cast copper alloy leg of cauldron with five defined moulded ribs running vertically from the broken end above the foot, now missing, to the angled and everted attachment end. This end would have been atached to the body of the vessel and is triangular in plan and section. The foot would have not had a collar and claw but instead a straight stumpy terminal, like the examples below (Roderick Butler pers comm). Read (1988) illustrates a similar leg on page 95, Nos.587, which dates from the 17th century. Butler & Green (2003) illustrate similar legs attached to cauld…

Cast copper alloy cauldron foot, trapezium-shaped in plan, triangular in profile and rectangular in section, broken at the point where it would have attached to a leg to support one side of a cauldron. The upper surface of the foot is smooth and has never had ribs or claws, but does have casting flaws as it tapers towards the missing leg. The base of the foot is slightly hollowed and damaged at one edge where the foot might have melted in the fire to create a molten bubble, now hollow. The end of the foot has been filed and polished to create a chamfered edge. The angle of the foot to…

Cast copper alloy cauldron leg and foot, with a central rib vertically running down the foot, and the remains of two other ribs either side of it. The short section of leg above the foot has three ridges, set back from the missing collar, and showing signs of melting, along with the 'toe' end of the foot. The foot has been moulded into a spreading hoof, semi-circular in section and triangular in profile. Butler and Green (2003) illustrate similar examples on cauldrons with ridged legs on pages 102 & 144, Nos.85 & 149, which are dated to the 17th century.

Cast copper alloy cauldron leg and foot with five defined moulded ribs running vertically from the broken end of the leg, to the bulbous transverse collar above the foot. The central rib of the five ribs is twice as thick as the others, which is typical of Post-medieval cauldron legs. The foot is in a claw formation with seven moulded ribs that splay outwards slightly. The broken end, which is semi-circular in section, would have widened to a curved flat terminal that would have attached to the body of the vessel and. There is black organic material adhering to the surface of the leg,…

Large cast copper alloy receptacle foot, probably from a cauldron, trapezoidal in plan, triangular in profile and semi-circular in section. There are five defined moulded ribs running vertically from the broken end which then expand into five claws, curving outwards towards the base of the flanged foot. The broken upper edge would have continued into a leg and expanded to the angled and everted attachment end. This end would have been atached to the body of the vessel and would have been more triangular in section. The claws are worn and cracked, from use and exposure to heat. The bac…

Incomplete cast copper alloy leg and foot from a cauldron, rectangular in plan, L-shaped in profile and semi-circular in section. The foot has five moulded ribs running vertically down the leg until they meet the foot which begins to flange outwards to form a base. The base is no longer flat and may be an incomplete foot or just a simple everted foot. The back of the foot is also flat. The surface of the leg is corroded with black patches of burnt organic material on the base, and on the back and front of the leg. Cast copper alloy cauldron foot and fragment of leg, fractured diagonally just above the foot of the leg. A central raised rib runs longitudinally from the 'cleft' toe to the broken edge and there are parallel ribs on either side that follow the front edges of the foot. The leg flares outwards at the base, similar to those on large cauldrons that have 'animal foot designs' such as one illustrated in Butler and Green (2003) on page 166, fig.1. The indent at the centre of the 'hoofed foot' may not be deliberate but is a result of a casting flaw where the bubble in the molten metal has b…

Cast copper alloy cauldron leg, attached to a fragment of the body of the vessel. The leg tapers into a pointed end and has a single raised, rounded rib that runs longitudinally along the centre of the leg and continues up the outside of the main cauldron body, where it intersects with a narrower cordon that runs horizontally across the body of the vessel. These ribs are similar to the wire moulding on the Westcountry cauldrons illustrated by Butler and Green (2003) on page 165, nos.170-172, which are dated from the 15th to the 16th century. The straight-sided shape and flat underside…

Cast copper alloy fragment of a vessel leg, probably from a cauldron, that is triangular in section and tapers to a point at the edge of the leg. The edge is mainly straight and bent slightly in one area, suggesting a long straight leg with a flat back and one central rib at the front, which would have tapered slightly towards the foot. The fragment expands from 3 mm at the outer edge towards the broken inner edge, which is 8.5 mm thick, where it would have developed into a rib on one side, but this has since broken off and the rest of the leg is missing. Cast copper alloy body fragment from a cauldron that curves into a neck and then expands into the base of the rim, but the rest of the rim is missing. The body of the vessel curves downwards to suggest a globular vessel with everted rim, as seen on cauldrons. The curvature of the broken edge of the body suggests a diameter of 260 mm for the vessel. The base of the rim is 5 mm thick which then tapers to the body which is 4 mm thick at the opposite edge of the fragment. There are patches of black burnt organic material on the exterior of the fragment, suggesting it was used for cooking.…

Cast copper alloy vessel leg, probably from a cauldron, that is rectangular in plan and profile and triangular in section, with a central longitudinal rib which tapers to a thin edge on both sides. The foot is worn and looks to have melted and then solidified, suggesting that it was left for too long by the fire. The end of the foot would have been rounded but one side is missing, which has broken off during use, as there is wear and corrosion on the surface of the angular break. These types of long flat legs are found on cauldrons and larger vessels like those below. Butler & Gree…
