Incomplete stamped lead alnage cloth seal of Charles II (1660-1685), consisting of two sub-circular discs joined by a folded connecting strip. The obverse face bears the image in relief of the bust of Charles II facing right. On the reverse is the image of a crowned thistle with the letter 'I' in the left field, but nothing to the right where the duty in pence is normally represented. The images on both sides are contained within a circular border of incuse rays. There also appears to be part of a border of stamped beading around the rays on the obverse, but parts of the edges are miss…

Cast lead weight, rectangular in plan and profile, and flat in section. It has been incised at one end with the letters 'M' and 'N' which might refer to someone's initials. The top face has also been incised with a single horizontal line down the middle of the weight. Small flat lead rectangular or square weights are often termed 'Apothecary weights' which were used from the 15th to the 17th centuries, once the mass of the English penny declined steeply and the current penny could no longer be used as a substitute for a weight, especially for sensitive purposes such as making medic…

Incomplete cast lead papal bulla of Pope Clement VI (1342-1352), with the name in relief CLE/MENS/PP VI on the reverse, a floret above and below. The small floret at the start of the text, and the reversed bar to the 'N' are characteristic of bullae of Clement VI. The obverse is very worn and only a few pellets remain that would have formed part of the border and surrounded the heads of St. Peter and St. Paul, to the left and right of a cross in the centre. Bullae of Clement VI are relatively frequent and mark an upsurge in the use of papal documents about the time of the Black Death. …

Cast lead continental cloth seal decorated with an ornate 'A', with annulets above, below and to the sides, on one face of the seal, and a pinecone, on a lentoid base with side projections, on the opposite face. The pinecone represents the heraldic device for the city of Augsburg, in Germany, and the 'A' confirms the provenance as the first letter of the place name. The seal was used for 'fustians', a mixed linen and cotton fabric, and one of the most commonly imported textiles during the 16th and early 17th centuries. The trade to England from Augsburg ended during the Thirty Year's …

Cast lead trade weight or net weight, oval in plan and flat in profile, with an integral attachment loop with a perforation hole of about 7 mm in diameter. This is not a standing weight, as it has no base, so it must have been meant to hang from its suspension loop. It is 31 mm in length, 20 mm in width and 5 mm in thickness at it base and 3 mm in thickness at its attachment loop. The weight weighs about 16.59 grams which equates to about two thirds of an ounce averdepois. Biggs & Withers (2000) illustrate a more cylindrical example on page 33, No.78. Bailey (DF2) also illustrate…

Stamped lead cloth seal of four-disc form: Disc 1: a tripartite motif with the number 24 below, which is presumably the length of the cloth in yards as measured. Disc 2: the initials of the alnager: TB to the sides of a flower (perhaps a pun on the surname - ? = Bloom/Blossom etc.) surrounded by a ring of pellets, with the legend 'HAMSHIRE' around the outside. Disc 3: a crowned heraldic rose. Disc 4: 'searched' written as SER/CHE/D. This seal dates from the 17th century, c.1600-1650 (Geoff Egan pers comm).

Lead cloth seal of four-disc form, stamped on the inner discs, with the initial of the alnager: 'S' surrounded by the word 'HAMPSHIRE' inside a raised ring border: the other disc is stamped with a bird within a shield, which is in turn also within a ring border. The bird has a hooked beak and bells on its legs, above the claws, suggesting that it is meant to portray a hawk or a bird of prey. This seal dates from the 17th century (Geoff Egan pers comm).

Cast lead palm guard for a leather worker's palm. The guard is oval in plan and slightly plano-convex in profile. The shape is said to suggest that they were moulded in oyster shells. There is a slight circular depression or indentation, about the size of a finger-tip, in the upper face of the guard. This would have been wrapped in leather with a hole in it to match the depression in the lead. Bailey (1993) illustrates a similar example on page 65, Fig.2, which is dated to the 17th century.

Cast lead fishing weight, lozenge-shaped in plan and semi-circular in profile and section, with tapering ends, which have been pinched or worn by the use of suspension sting at either end, around the protruding knops. Cast lead gaming piece or weight, square in plan and sub-pyramidal in profile and section, with a central groove which might have been used for suspension or the shape may represent a keep or castle if it was used as a gaming piece. As its weight equates to a little over one ounce (1.03 oz), this suggests that it might have more likely been used as a weight. Biggs and Withers (2000) illustrate two similar weights on page 33, No.79, which is an irregular pyramid, and No.84 which is a square pyramid that might be a gaming piece instead.

Cast lead weight or plummet, trapezoidal in plan and profile, and square in section, with a large lentoid aperture, 13 mm in length and 7 mm in width, for suspending a rope. The weight was probably used at the end of a rope to measure the number of fathoms down from the edge of a boat to the sea bed. The term 'swinging the lead' is used to describe this procedure and has come to mean a lazy sailor because the sailor would swing the lead and only drop it overboard when he was being watched. This example looks cruder and smaller than those seen on-line, which may mean that it…

Cast lead circular mount with a moulded lion's face and mane on its upper surface within a field with a circular border. Beyond this border the edge is bevelled. The lion's face is in high relief, with defined eyebrows and recessed eyes, but the mane is set back, flush with the border. The mane has two annulets above the eyebrows, which are presumably meant to represent ears. On the flat lower face, at the cardinal points of N and S, project two differing lengths of iron wire, evidently the means by which this object was fixed.
