Cordoned rim sherd from a large jar of Roman date (c. 100-300 AD) with a rolled rim and larger applied cordon, immediately beneath it, with a groove between to define the cordons. The sherd is a bright orangey colour throughout and the surfaces have been oxidised. The fabric contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. The clay may have been made more iron-rich in order for the jar to look more like the terracotta colour of the Roman imports at the time. Romano-British in form. Carlyon (1987) illustrates …

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pottery body sherd with an oblique line of single twisted cord-impressed decoration running across the left side of the exterior of the sherd. The sherd is made of gabbroic clay that weathers over the gabbro outcrop on the Lizard in Cornwall. The fabric has inclusions of pale felspars, dark augite and mica, and is orangey-brown on the exterior and on the interior of the sherd, and throughout the core. This gabbroic fabric and type of decoration are seen on comparable local Grooved Ware vessels, dating from c.2900-2400 BC (Henrietta Quinnell, forthcoming). Anna Brindley in Cleal and …

Pottery rim sherd from an open jar with an everted rim and an almost S-shaped profile, but it is broken above the shoulder of the vessel. The rim is uneven and poorly finished and from the curvature and fabric, the sherd appears to be comparable to Gwithian style ware which dates from the 6th to the 7th centuries AD (Carl Thorpe pers comm). The fabric is an orange to brown colour with felspar and mica inclusions, and has been high fired, which again suggests that it is Early Medieval in date and not from the Iron Age (Carl Thorpe pers comm).

Object type: LAMP
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete pottery lamp with a turned, cyclindrical body, widening towards the base, which has broken off, and tapering towards the everted base of the reservoir for the oil. There is some sooting apparent in this reservoir base, but most of it is now missing. It was probably originally circular to oval in plan with short sides and a lip at one end to hold the end of the wick so that it could be lit. The fabric is a buff to light orange colour with exterior sooting, and is quite micaceous, which suggests that it is Lostwithiel type ware and dates from the 16th century (Carl…

Pottery sherd of decorated grooved ware. The outer surface is incised with alternating oblique lines in a herringbone pattern. The fabric is reddish-brown in colour and fine with small particles or inclusions of pale feldspar, dark augite or tourmaline and mica. The fabric looks gabbroic, from clay that weathers over the gabbro stone on the Lizard in Cornwall (Henrietta Quinnell forthcoming). Gossip & Jones (2007) illustrate a pot with similar decoration from a Clacton sub-style vessel on page 55, Fig.23, No.PP 4, which was found in a ritual pit No.293. Another ritual pit nearby con…

Two pottery body sherds that fit together to form part of the side of a jar. The sherds have a brown interior and core and an orangey exterior. The fabric contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. The larger body sherd measures 56 mm long by 36 mm wide by 10 mm thick, and the smaller 36 mm long by 47 mm wide by 9 mm thick, which is probably closer to the rim of the vessel. Similar pottery jars have been found at other sites in Penwith, such as Porthmeor and Chysauster, and date from the Romano-Briti…

Pottery rim sherd from a round-based bowl with a narrowed pointed rim and scratched linear decoration in a random cross-hatched pattern on the exterior. The fabric is a uniform light brown throughout with a reduced exterior and is likely to be gabbroic with light felspar, dark augite and large quartzite inclusions. Neolithic in form. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example from Carn Brea from a rounded bowl on page 173, Fig.71, No.P114, which is dated to the Early Neolithic period, c.3900-3300 BC.

Pottery body sherd of Samian ware with some slip surviving, probably of plain Samian ware but not enough remains to be sure. The fabric is fine and a uniform terracotta colour throughout with a slightly grey surface where the pottery has reacted with the darker red slip, as the slip has decayed over time. Roman import. Carlyon (1987) lists similar fragments on pages 107-109 from Carvossa, but does not illustrate them.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Ceramic floor tile, rectangular in plan and flat in section, now broken into two sections, with four peg holes which would have held another rectangular flat object, possibly made of metal or slate, in order to repair the tile and link the two pieces back together. The frabric is a uniform orange colour throughout and is fine with a few pale inclusions, that could be felspars. This suggests that the tile is Post-medieval in date, and most likely to be relatively modern.

Incomplete pottery handle of large cistern or pitcher, similar to a strap handle in plan but oval in section, which is less common, locally. The fabric is typical of the local Lostwithiel ware, with felspar and mica inclusions, which is dated from the 15th to 16th century, for this style of handle. The remains of the body attached to the end of the handle is 68 mm in length, 74 mm in width, and 24 mm in thickness. The handle is 104 mm long, 53 mm wide and 40 mm thick. Pottery strap handle fragment from a pitcher with orangey-grey oxidised exterior surfaces and light grey reduced interior and multiple mica inclusions which suggest that it is made of Lostwithiel ware. Pottery body sherd of globular, cooking vessel, probably with a sagging base, decorated with an incised wavy line on the exterior surface just below the shoulder, which would have been the widest point of the vessel. The fabric is a buff to light brown colour throughout and has white mica, pale felspar and dark platey inclusions. The sherd has an oxidised interior and a dark brown sooted exterior. Pottery storage jar broken into about eighty sherds, with an S-shaped profile, but with no rim sherds to determine if it is everted. The shoulder and body of the vessel are incised with wider horizontal bands, running around the circumference, which border narrower oblique lines in a rough upright lattice pattern. This pattern is probably imitating the lattice decoration seen on Black Burnished ware produced in Britain during the Roman period, and particularly Black Burnished 1 (BB1) which was first produced in Dorset and other areas and was widely distributed from AD 120 to the late …

Large pottery body sherd of a large urn or food vessel decorated with a single line of a double-plaited or twisted cord impression running along the upper edge of the exterior of the sherd, where it has broken away from the rest of the vessel. This is probably the lower border of a panel of decoration which is normally found in the upper third of the pot, which can have combinations of twisted cord impressed chevrons and oblique lines between the horizontal borders. Pottery sherd with fine incised pairs of parallel oblique lines within vertical linear borders, also consisting of two parallel lines. The pairs of oblique lines, which are at about a 45 degree angle, are divided by a central pair of vertical lines, so that they appear as a chevron or herringbone pattern when looked at as a whole. Fragment of a pottery body sherd from a large Bronze Age urn or food vessel. The exterior is undecorated so that dating within the 2nd millennium BC is difficult. The fabric is a gabbroic (clay that weathers over the gabbro stone on the Lizard) with inclusions of pale feslpar, dark augite and mica. The colour of the fabric is a light brown interior to more oxidised orange exterior. The curvature of the upper edge of the sherd suggests that the original diameter of the vessel would have been about 400 mm in diameter.
