Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy strap mount, missing its hook at one end, with openwork decoration in the form of a trefoil plate with three apertures: two circular and one lozenge-shaped. There are two iron rivets still in the rivet holes at either end of the mount, one within a semi-circular terminal and the other within a rounded terminal, with a worn and broken bifurcate collar, which would have originally extended into the hook. The hook would have held a ring which would have suspended a secondary object from the strap that the mount was riveted to. See IOW-0A0576 for a similar e…

An incomplete Post-medieval copper alloy mount in the form of an acorn. The mount is convex at the front and concave at the rear. At the front it has a horizontal groove dividing the fruit from the 'cupule' or cupped base. There is a short, rounded 'stalk' at the bottom and an equivalent round decoration at the top, both separated from the main design by a horizontal groove. Both faces are reddish brown with small patches of green patina. There is no indication of any surface treatment. At the rear are the remains of two lugs, one close to each end of the mount; one lug is bent but …

Silver-plated copper alloy dandy button dating from the 18th century, 34 mm in diameter, 1 mm thick and weight 7.49 g. The button is decorated with a circle of 14 raised dots, each about 1.5 mm in diameter, about half-way between the circumference and the centre point; the dots have been punched into the metal from the opposite side. Otherwise there is no pattern on either surface of the button. The front face, with the raised dots, has been silvered; the silver coating is largely intact apart from having been rubbed away on the surfaces of the 14 dots and for around 0.5 mm around t…

Cast copper alloy composite three-piece button with a separate drawn iron wire shank or attachment loop. The upper surface is domed and is decorated with an incised pattern made of four intersecting pairs of arcs resulting in a design similar to a Canterbury cross, although lacking the square at the centre of the cross. The resulting 'flared' arms of the cross have been further decorated by the incision of nested V shapes within each arm of the cross. The surface bears traces of possible gilding. The reverse of the button is flat and is pitted with corrosion and the rusted remains o…

The broken end would have originally widened to a curved flat terminal that would have attached to the body of the vessel. The foot is triangular in profile and worn but meant to look like the hoof of an animal. There are patches of black organic material still adhering to the surface of the leg, which was burnt on when the skillet was standing near the fire. Cast lead gaming counter with four punched, recessed squares, 3 mm squared, set into one face. Egan (2005) illustrates two similar lead discs from London on page 163, fig.160, nos.836-7. No.836 has two rows of four stamped squares, and is dated from c.1530-1570, and no.837 has five stamped voided circles and is dated from c.1675-1700. Cast lead conical free-standing steelyard weight or poise with a flat base, that is pentagonal in plan but the sides are very worn and irregular so are less defined into five sections. There is a cylindrical perforation running vertically through the weight. The perforation would have probably held an iron shank that would have been used for suspension and attached the weight to a steelyard. The conical form is not symmetrical in profile, with the apex off centre to one side. The aperture just below the apex of the cone is 5 mm in diameter and the aperture at the base is wider, oval a…

The frame is symmetrical in plan with concave sides and is moulded at the front and plain at the back with bevelled inner edges. When viewed from the side, it has a curved profile, which may mean it was likely to have been a shoe buckle.
