Cordoned rim sherd from a large jar of Roman date (c. 100-300 AD) with a rolled rim and larger applied cordon, immediately beneath it, with a groove between to define the cordons. The sherd is a bright orangey colour throughout and the surfaces have been oxidised. The fabric contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. The clay may have been made more iron-rich in order for the jar to look more like the terracotta colour of the Roman imports at the time. Romano-British in form. Carlyon (1987) illustrates …

Pottery rim sherd from a bowl with a 'Cornish flanged' (Quinnell, 2004, p.124) rim. The flange below the rim is rounded and made of an added strip which has been applied to the body of the bowl. The angle of the flange is at about 90 degrees from the rim of the bowl. Above the flange is a recessed groove which helps to define it from the rim. The fabric is is a light orangey brown colour throughout and contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. The exterior surface has been black-coated and then burni…

Half of the upper stone of a greisen rotary quern, semi-circular in plan and plano-convex in profile and section. The upper surface shows the remains of a central hopper or recess, and a wedge-shaped aperture at one end which was part of the socket for slotting a wooden handle into the stone quern. The handle would have allowed the upper section of the two-part quern to be rotated over the base section, with the grain between the two, so that it was ground into flour. The break beyond the socket, an obvious weak spot, looks more recent as it is not too abraded. The diameter of the …

Large weathered granite lower stone or base of a rotary quern with a central hole for a wooden spindle to hold it to the upper stone of the rotary quern which would have also been perforated centrally. The spindle would have allowed the upper section of the two-part quern to be rotated over the base section, with the grain between the two, so that it was ground into flour. The stone is about 530 mm in diameter and about 100 mm thick at the eye which is 60 mm in diameter and a complete perforation. Such perforations may have enabled the spindle to have been fixed to a lever set beneath …

The spindle would have allowed the upper section of the two-part quern to be rotated over the base section, with the grain between the two, so that it was ground into flour. The upper stone is now broken into two pieces, and the larger piece is also pictured here. The diameter of the larger piece is about 290 mm and the height about 80 cm, and the diameter of the eye or hole about 30 mm. T…

Silver Republican legionary denarius of Mark Antony, c.32-31 BC, travelling mint, RRC 544/26 Stamped with an 'N' on the obverse which is a banker's mark. Were it an imperial or official countermark it would be a punched die (Sam Moorhead pers comm). This coin likely came in with the Roman army during the 1st century AD. However, Mark Antony denarii are known to have remained in circulation until the 3rd century AD.

Brass sestertius of Marcus Aurelius as Augustus (c.AD 161-180), Victory holding shield on trunk of palm tree with VIC PAR on shield, 2nd issue, c.AD 166; BMC 1290; RIC 934-5 This coin was struck to celebrate the Roman victory over the Parthian army in the East (note VIC PAR on the shield). The Romans even reached the Parthian capital Ctesiphon, in modern Iraq, which they sacked in AD 165. This coin is square in shape and would have come from a square blank clipped from a rectangular row of blanks, which was common way of producing sestertii in the 2nd century AD.

CORONER'S REPORT Description of Object A broken and distorted component of Roman gold jewellery, probably a necklace link. The fragment comprises a parallel-sided band, made from thin gold sheet, fractured at one end and with a double-eyed fastening loop at the complete end. Following breakage the fragment was bent back on itself, first the looped end then the broken end, the latter resulting in a partial tear. Denting of one rim may have occurred concurrently or subsequent to the ancient damage. The band has a front (outer) face and a back (inner) face. The latter display…
