An incomplete moulded copper-alloy mount depicting the head of a satyr, faun or the god Pan, with a beard and truncated horns in the forehead, at a 45 degree angle between facing and being in profile. The remains of the horns are projecting stumps that are now 3 mm in height and 3.5 mm in diameter. The ears are not pointed, as they are normally depicted in classical representations of the satyr, which suggests a post-Roman date. The reverse is concave with the broken end of a rivet immediately behind the moulded nose on the front of the face. The broken edges behind the head and below…

A Medieval cast copper-alloy bar mount with a pendent loop to suspend a purse frame or toiletry set, dating from c.1300-1400. The mount is 25 mm in length, 15 mm in width, 8 mm in thickness and 8.5 g in weight. It is made from a copper-alloy bar, 1 mm in thickness which consists of a front plate, 15 mm square, linked by a 4.5 mm wide bar which is bent back upon itself, terminating in a 9 mm wide lozenge at the back. The front plate and the lozenge are joined together by a single rivet. The copper alloy pendent loop is suspended through the bent strip and is circular in plan and D-shap…

Cast copper alloy gilt fragment of perhaps a harness or scabbard mount in the form of a bird with a pointed beak at one terminal opposite a pointed wing following the curve of the back of the beast. The two projections at the bottom of the beast may represent an incomplete leg and body which have worn to curved edges but may have extended into part of the mount that could have been attached to a leather strap. The front face of the mount is decorated with a high-relief animal motif with a U-shaped element below the raised round eye, which is now black but may have originally had red en…

Silver late Post-medieval openwork mount cast in low relief in the form of four five petalled rosettes connected by tendrils. The centre of each rosette has a linear groove, and each tendril has a short projection on the outer edge probably representing a thorn or leaf. The petals have been defined and filed down using a round file so that there is no pattern remaining from the mould. On the reverse are two circular-sectioned integral attachment lugs. The impression of the cuttlefish shell used to cast the mount is clearly visible on the reverse of the mount but it appears that two di…

A moulded copper-alloy hooked mount of Post-medieval date. The mount is 34 mm in total length and weighs 6.15 g. The parallel-sided terminal knop opposite the hook is 7.5 mm in length and 6.5 mm in width, with a rounded top and one rivet hole containing the remains of an iron rivet. At the base of the knop is a slightly raised transverse band separating it from the hollow, hemispherical body which is 14 mm in diameter. The body is, in turn, separated from the integral hook by a more well-defined raised band. At the back of the mount, behind the junction of the body with the hook, the …

Cast copper alloy appliqué figurative mount in the form of a reclining Medieval knight dressed in armour, hooded mail and a layered tunic. The figure is lying on his right side, resting his head on his bent right arm as he looks upwards. His left arm is also bent with his hand on his hip. His legs are crossed right over left at the ankles. He has a collar made of multiple oblique transverse grooves which represent the mail, and mouldings on his arms and legs for the joints in the armour. He also has a sash at the waist with three raised ribs on either side which gather in the ce…

Incomplete cast copper alloy Post-Medieval mount with two integral lugs. The mount has damaged edges so that it looks more diamond shaped in plan but would have originally had a curved edge like the example referenced below. There are two incomplete rounded knops, one at either end of the mount. Both of these are decorated with oblique grooved lines from the edge of the knop, but the original surface is pitted and missing so the pattern is unclear. The back is slightly concave and at either end, behind each knop, there is a worn lug, 2.5 mm in diameter and now only 2 mm in length, whi…

Incomplete cast copper alloy Post-Medieval mount with two integral lugs. The mount is sub-oval in shape with a rounded knop at either end. Both of these are decorated with oblique grooved lines forming a foliate pattern. The back is slightly concave and at either end, behind each knop, there is a worn lug, now only 3 mm in length, which would have extended to a point originally. Cast copper alloy stud or tack, sexfoil in plan with moulded decoration in the form of a three-layered fleuret with six small petals around a central circle and then six larger petals emanating from these and alternating with six lobed leaves within six arches that are meant to represent more petals underneath, alternating with six knops which form the border at the edge of the stud. The corroded base of shank on the back of the stud may be the remains of a separate iron rivet as it is covered in iron corrosion product so it is hard to see if this is another piece of metal as most of …

Silver mount, possibly a hat badge or made to decorate a leather strap, dating from the Medieval period. It represents the half-length figure of a bearded male, probably a saint, issuing from a scalloped border. The figure has a shoulder strap that crosses his torso diagonally, and he holds a staff in his left hand with a curved crook at the top, with a fold of his cloak draped over his left arm. A projecting ridge along the brow of the head suggests that he is wearing a cap, suggesting that the figure may represent St James the Great, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and the first …

Incomplete cast copper alloy mount in the form of a stylised acorn with an integral suspension loop for suspending a sword scabbard from a baldric. The mount is missing its sheet copper alloy backplate that would have been riveted to the hollow back through the small rivet hole, 1 mm in diameter, just below the pointed terminal, in order to mount it on to the leather baldric. The suspension loop would have had a pendant that would have attached to the sword belt or scabbard. The mount is plano-convex in profile with four chamfered longitudinal sides that follow the curvature of the mo…

Cast copper alloy mount in the form of an acorn. The mount is convex at the front and concave at the rear. At the front it has a curved transverse groove dividing the fruit from the 'cupule' or cupped base. The cupule is decorated with moulded cross-hatching, but most of the original surface has corroded away. There is an L-shaped stalk at the bottom of the mount and a rounded knop at the top, both separated from the main design by a horizontal groove. Incomplete cast gilt copper alloy mount with a central rivet hole, but an additional application of lead solder on to the back of the mount with a linear groove suggests that it may have held a pin to attach it to clothing as a secondary use. The upper face has foliate decoration in the form of scroll work borders around a central leaf motif within a bi-lobed body which terminates in a pointed knop. The opposite edge is broken and would have extended into a longer mount with another rivet hole for attachment at the opposite end. Read (2001) illustrates mounts with similar bifid sha…

Incomplete sheet copper alloy mount decorated on the upper face with punched dots in for the form of a heart with two eyes at the apex and a trefoil terminal with punched lozenges that appear like ears, so that the whole composition looks like an owl's face. One end of the mount is broken but appears to have had two openwork circles or two attachment loops that would have extended beyond this riveted end of the mount. Cast copper alloy mount in the form of an eagle displayed, with head turned to the left and wings outspread. There are two rivet holes at the base of the mount, between the tail and the two claws of the eagle, that are 3 mm in diameter, but the rivets are no longer extant. The body and upper half of the wings are decorated with raised moulded squares and the lower half of the wings have raised ridges to appear like feathers. There is no decoration on the back of the mount, which is flat, and no sign of any other attachment points. The mount was likely used as an armorial badge as the e…
