Silver cut half of a short cross penny of John (1199-1216), Class Vb1 (c.1205), moneyer Iohan, mint of Canterbury. The class is Vb1 (Wren 1992, pp.52-53), distinguished by the fact that on the obverse the hand holding the sceptre divides the obverse legend between the E and X of REX, whereas the majority of legends on all classes of short cross pennies are divided between the R and EX. Mass (2001) illustrates a very similar penny of Iohan of Canterbury, Class Vb1 in plate 51, no.1365, which is dated to 1205.
