Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead suspension weight dating from the Post-medieval period, c.1600-1800. The weight is sub circular in plan and plano-convex in section; between 37 mm and 39.5 mm in diameter, 14 mm in height and 93.7 g in weight (3.3 oz). One face is flat and is scarred by numerous linear incisions where it has been trimmed. The opposite surface is domed and pitted from the original, crude casting process and with at least five later, short linear gouge marks. A suspension hole, circular in plan, 5.5 mm in diameter, and cylindrical in profile, 12 mm long, has been drilled through the weight; …

Cast lead pyramidal suspension weight dating from the Post-medieval period. The weight is sub rectangular in section, 33.5 mm tall, 15 mm x 12 mm at its base, narrowing to 11.5 mm x 4.5 mm at the top and with a weight of 38.1 g. (1.34 oz). The weight is pierced by a circular hole, 2 mm in diameter, close to the top. Its base is flat so that it could also be used as a standing weight and the base is deeply incised with a large letter V. The weight does not appear to correspond with any standard measurement in either the averdepois or troy systems, so the incised mark has no apparent me…

A pierced cast lead weight of Medieval or Post-medieval date, c.1200-1700. The weight is 23 mm in length, between 11 mm and 15 mm in width, 9.5 mm in thickness and 23 g in weight which equates to three quarters of a troy ounce and four fifths of an avoirdupois ounce. It is sub-conical in shape, being trapezoidal in plan and section and triangular in profile, with a flat base and top and with one flat and one convex face. The weight is pierced for suspension by a circular hole 8 mm long and 5 mm in diameter at the flat face tapering to 4 mm at the convex face. The weight has a uniform,…

Lead goldsmiths weight, square in plan and rectangular in profile, with a raised single fleur de lis with a transverse band at the centre on the obverse and what appears to be a cross-hatched pattern on the reverse, but the surface is too worn to make out the detail. It weighs 2.45 g which equates to a twelfth of a Troy ounce (30.5g) and would have been used by goldsmiths, who bought precious metal by weight, to check the weight of bullion. Biggs and Withers (2000) illustrate similar lead goldsmiths weights with banded fleurs de lis on the obverse and cross-hatched reverses, whi…

A lead standing weight. The weight is an octagonal pyramid, fluted at the sides resulting in an irregular octagon in section, wider at the base and tapering to the top where there is an integral suspension loop. Its total length is 52.5 mm, diameter 20.5 mm at its base narrowing to 11.5 mm at the top, immediately below the rectangular suspension loop which is 11 mm x 7 mm. The loop has been slightly crushed and bent and is pierced by a hole which is now 3 mm wide and 1.5 mm deep. The weight has a mass of 99.6 g (3.51 ounces avoirdupois). The weight is unstamped and there is a hole nea…

A complete cast lead standing weight. Trapezoidal in plan, sub-rectangular in profile and rectangular in section. Height 87.5 mm, width 36.5 mm tapering to 33.5 mm at the top, thickness 29 mm tapering to 17.5 mm at the top and weighing 704 g (1lb 8.8 oz). A circular suspension hole, slightly biconical, 9 mm in diameter, has been drilled 20 mm from the narrow top end. The entire surface is covered with a well-developed grey-white patina of lead corrosion product. The base of the weight is marked by parallel lines suggesting that it has been filed flat in order that it might stand. Othe…

Cast lead pan weight, circular in plan and trapezoidal in profile with a flat top and sides that expand slightly to the base. The upper face has an incuse tower with three turrets and above it are stamped 'IIII' for four ounces or four Roman unciae, the origin of the word ounce, which equated to 108 g. The weight weighs 109.9 g or almost 4 ounces averdupois. The underside is marked with an indistinct triangular impression and there is a deep linear transverse groove just beyond this which appears to be later damage. See WMID-796032 for a similar lead pan weight with four 'IIII' inc…

Cast copper alloy trade weight, circular in plan and biconical in profile, The upper face has a raised tower between three pellets, one on either side and one below, with a raised circular border all within an incuse circle. There is also an incised cross above which touches the edge of the circle, but looks more like an 'X'. The weight weighs 45.35 g or 1.6 ounces avoirdupois or 1.5 troy ounces. The sides of the weight have been filed down to makes it less heavy, which has created the chamfered edges, so it may have originally been a 2 ounce weight. The tower or castle is a common mo…

Incomplete cast copper alloy trade weight of Henry VII (1485-1509) or Henry VIII (1509-1547) with an incuse crowned 'h' between two incised concentric circles. The weight weighs 22.6g but is missing about a fifth of its weight from one edge. Bailey (2000) illustrates a similar trade weight of Henry VII or Henry VIII on page 41, fig.27.

Cast lead conical free-standing steelyard weight or poise with a flat base, that is pentagonal in plan but the sides are very worn and irregular so are less defined into five sections. There is a cylindrical perforation running vertically through the weight. The perforation would have probably held an iron shank that would have been used for suspension and attached the weight to a steelyard. The conical form is not symmetrical in profile, with the apex off centre to one side. The aperture just below the apex of the cone is 5 mm in diameter and the aperture at the base is wider, oval a…
