Silver Roman legionary denarius of Marcus Antonius or Mark Antony, c.32-31 BC, LEG VIII type, Eastern mint, BMRC 200. These coins were struck by Mark Antony for the use of his fleet and legions when he was preparing for the struggle with Octavius, which culminated in the Battle of Actium on the 2nd of September, 31 BC (Grueber, 1970, 526). Similar to an example illustrated in Coins of the Roman Republican in the British Museum (Grueber, 1970), Volumes II & III, on page 528, No.200, Plate CXVI, Fig.8.

Silver Republican denarius with only four letters left on the obverse NIVS and a bare head facing right with curly hair and no beard and a defined angular mark at the base of the neck. So perhaps it is a denarius with the head and legend of Marcus Antonius, or Mark Antony (83-30 BC), but must date from at least the time of the Second Triumvirate with Octavian, established in 43 BC. The closest parallels that the recorder can find are on coins from the east, c.32-31 BC, with small lettering behind the head, and the best example of these is illustrated in BMC, Republic III (1970) on Pla…

Silver Republican legionary denarius of Mark Antony, c.32-31 BC, travelling mint, RRC 544/26 Stamped with an 'N' on the obverse which is a banker's mark. Were it an imperial or official countermark it would be a punched die (Sam Moorhead pers comm). This coin likely came in with the Roman army during the 1st century AD. However, Mark Antony denarii are known to have remained in circulation until the 3rd century AD.

Contemporary silver plated copy of a denarius of Tiberius (AD 14-37). This type of denarius is commonly referred to as the 'Tribute Penny' of the Bible (Matthew 22, 17-21). This coin has an irregular die axis (3 o'clock) and another denarius of Tiberius, also with an irregular die axis, was recovered from the floor of the officers' quarters in one of the barracks within the fort during its excavation. The flan has recent rim damage below the Emperor's portrait on the obverse and the deliberate defacement of Livia on the head of the figure on the reverse.
