Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Gilt cast copper alloy harness pendant hanger or suspension mount, with a central square plate decorated with an eagle within a linear border. Above the square plate is a rounded knop with a rivet hole and rivet intact, and below it a rectangular extension, with another rivet intact. The extension of the plate leads to the suspension loops with a copper alloy pin between them holding the remains of the arm of the pendant. Read (2001) illustrates similar examples on page 51, Fig.30, Nos.390 & 393, which are dated to c.1250-1400.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Gilt sheet copper alloy one-piece thimble with flattish crown and a broad border below two linear bands, running the circumference of the thimble. The border, at the base of the thimble, is decorated with cross-hatching behind a pattern of scrolled foliage. The indentations are circular and are alligned in continuous concentric rows.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of a cast copper-alloy buckle frame, part of a shuttle-shaped shoe buckle with a drilled frame for a separate spindle. On the upper face is a pattern in relief of two interlaced ribbons with moulded square nailheads within a beaded border, and moulded rosettes surrounding circular and ovate openwork. One edge of the frame, beside the circular openwork, still retains the lip, setting and drilled hole for the spindle. The back of the frame is smooth and flat.
Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 109, No.701, which is dated to c.1720-1790s.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy double-loop oval spectacle buckle frame with all-over moulded surface decoration. The outer edge of each loop has a collared barrel moulding half way along it, beyond which, on either side, are moulded curvilinear ribs framed by four collars and two scrolled knops at symmetrical points on each loop. There is a lobed knop in the form of a hominoid head at either end of the strap bar, which is narrowed and slightly recessed from the 'chins' of the heads.
Whitehead (1996) illustrates a very similar example on page 68, No.427, which is dated to c.1550-1650.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of a cast copper alloy sub-square hat buckle with a drilled frame for a separate spindle. This is the side of the frame with the drilled spindle hole with seven moulded transverse grooves over the hole, and slightly bevelled and narrowed edges on the internal corners of the frame. Part of the iron spindle has corroded in the hole, leaving iron oxide on the surface of one side. The spindle would most probably have been fitted with a stud chape with multiple tongues in order to fix them to the light fabric of the hat.

Fragment of a cast copper alloy rectangular folding strap clasp with the folding end, its ovoid mount and rivet intact, the frame, and part of one side of the folded sheet copper alloy plate attached to the frame, extant. The folding end is shield-shaped, with three points, which was probably made to match a shield-shaped strap end. The mount on the strap end would then have slotted into the gap in the frame between the folded end, turned back on itself, and the end of the plate, around the bar of the frame. Egan (2002) illustrates a similar example on page 118, Fig.77, No.553, which …

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint plano-convex pointed knife, lozenge-shaped in plan, semi-circular in profile and triangular in section. Both the lateral margins and the distal and the proximal ends are worked on the dorsal face. These are finely retouched with what appears to be pressure flaking. The remains of surface gloss on the right edge of the dorsal face of the knife shows that it was used against organic matter.
The flint is a mottled light grey to translucent brown colour and could therefore be made from local flint sources. The length to breadth ratio is a bit more than 3:1.

Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Five flint single-platform micro-cores found together in a scatter, circular in plan, sub-rectangular in section and semi-circular in profile. The cores have had blades taken off them on two thirds of the way around its central axis, with a layer of cortex generally running from the edge of the platform down to the base of the core on the remaining third section.
The flint is a mottled pale to mid-grey colour and the curvature of the core suggests that it was made from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is almost 1:1 in most cases, which is usual for micro-cores.

Greenstone (epidiorite or dolerite) whetstone or muller with two worked edges, probably used to polish metal, although the base may also have been used as a rubbing stone, to grind grain.
The muller is sub-oval in plan, with one rounded end and one flat, where the edge is slightly damaged. The stone is sub-triangular in section, flat on the side that was used for rubbing, and also worked on the other two oblique faces, where it was used instead as a base for polishing metal implements. The muller base would have been used with a larger saddle quern to grind grain between the stones …
