Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast solid tin or tin alloy button with a slightly raised centre within a border of raised pellets. The back has the raised circular base, 2 mm in diameter, of an attachment loop and some iron staining around it suggesting that this might have been made of iron. But similar examples of tiny tin buttons, referenced below, have solid simple looped shanks that are circular in section and made of the same material in general. Egan & Pritchard (2002) illustrate a tin button with a border of raised pellets and the base of a solid circular shank on the bank on p.275, fig.178, no.1382, whi…

Cast copper alloy skillet foot, in the form of a plain hoof. The foot is ovate in plan, triangular in profile and lentoid in section with a tapering broken upper edge which suggests a thin leg for a small vessel. The upper edge is rough and bright green from the bronze disease, now active after recent damage, in contrast to the smooth dark green patina of the rest of the foot. The front of the foot has also been damaged but part of it has formed a skin suggesting it has been in the soil for some time since this edge was knocked off, while a section is light green where the edge has re…

A cast copper-alloy, double-loop, spectacle buckle. The buckle 30 mm wide, 26 mm long, 3 mm in thickness and 5.2 g in weight. The loops are D-shaped in plan and in section with bevelled inner edges. The strap bar is narrowed and trapezoidal in section, 2 mm in width, and recessed from the frame or inverted because the loops are slightly bent upwards. The pin is missing and there is no pin rest on the outer edges of the loops but there appears to be moulded foliate decoration on the edges that survive under the pitted corrosion product, where the upper layers of the frame have corroded…

Cast copper alloy dagger or sword scabbard chape, V-shaped in plan with a tapering end which terminates in a projecting knop. The back is hollow where it would have been mounted on to a leather scabbard, a fragment of which still remains inside the tapered end, and would once have had a back-plate which is now missing. The face of the chape is decorated by a central, longitudinal, linear rib, 2 mm wide, which would also have served to strengthen it. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Worked fragment of the body of a brass vessel with a high percentage of copper content (87.5%), and 11.2 % tin and 0.88 % lead. Judging from the curvature of the fragment, the vessel was probably 120-140 mm in diameter but the piece has been bent in one direction so absolute accuracy is difficult. The brass is not tarnished and the wall of the vessel is very thin, suggesting that it is post-industrial in date, and the area that it was found in has had a lot of local industrial activity. The piece was tested to prove that it was not gold and therefore not potential Treasure.
