Cast copper alloy foot from a cauldron leg, 64.5 mm long, 49 mm wide and 17.5 mm thick at the broken end increasing to 61 mm wide and flaring outwards to 29 mm in thickness at the base, and weighing 310.2 gm. The front face is divided by three deep groves into three wide lobes and a smaller, narrower lobe at one side, producing a shape resembling the paw of an animal such as a lion or dog, with four toes. The back surface is flat apart from a casting flaw in the form of a large oval pit, 14 mm long, 9.5 mm wide and 7 mm deep. The underside is slightly dished and when placed on the gro…

A rim fragment from a cast copper alloy cauldron. The fragment is 123 mm in width, 51 mm in height and 3.5 mm thick, widening to 5 mm thick at the rim and a weight of 161.9 g. The rim is out-turned and bevelled on its inner edge; the outer edge is flattened, partly by filing away the surplus metal after casting. The curvature of the rim suggests that it would have been 280 mm in diameter which falls comfortably within the normal range for a cauldron and suggests a vessel with a capacity of between 4½ and 6 gallons. The outer surface is rough and mostly covered in black burnt organic …

Incomplete cast copper alloy cauldron leg, 91 long, 33 mm wide, increasing to 41.5 mm at the foot. It is 14 mm in thickness, flaring outwards to 19 mm at its bulbous foot, and weighs 259 g. The surfaces are pitted and abraded and the everted foot is severely worn so there is little of the base left. The front face is decorated with a single, moulded, central rib and the back face is flat. There are patches of burnt black organic material on the surface as a result of the food that dripped down the leg from the cauldron when it was in the fire. The leg resembles those of a 16th centur…

Cast copper alloy cauldron leg, sub-triangular in plan and plano-convex in section. The attachment to the curved vessel body still remains, and the leg then tapers evenly to a transverse collar and then to the foot which has worn to a rounded end. The outer face of the leg has five vertical ribs, varying in width from 7 mm at the edge, to 11 mm in the centre, which terminate at the transverse collar which divides the leg from the foot. The foot might have originally also been ridged, but it is now so worn it has lost its claw-like terminal. The back of the leg is flat and has been del…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy receptacle leg and foot from a cauldron, square in plan, L-shaped in profile and plano-convex in section at the broken edge and trapezoidal at the base. There is a larger central rib, 8 mm thick, running vertically down the centre of the leg, from the broken upper edge to the tip of the foot, and a thinner rib, 6 mm thick, on either edge of the foot. The foot is flat and undecorated and the base is flat with some recesses of wear. Incomplete copper alloy cauldron leg, rectangular in plan and profile and plano-convex in section where the collar has broken away from the foot. The leg has parallel sides with five moulded ribs running vertically from the broken upper end and terminating at a bulbous, transverse collar. The back of the leg is flat. The junction with the body of the cauldron is missing whilst the base of the collar is pitted with the foot having previously worn away, probably through use. The back edge of the collar, where the cauldron would have been in contact with the ground, is slightly rounded. …

Incomplete copper alloy cauldron leg, sub-rectangular in plan and in profile and sub-triangular in section, with sides tapering slightly from the top towards the now-missing foot. It is decorated with a single, moulded, central rib. Part of the body of the cauldron is still attached to the upper end of the leg and there appears to be a pattern of cross-hatching on it that would have been created by textile or mesh applied to the cauldron interior when it was molten at the surface. There are also patches of black organic material adhering to the leg which would have been burnt on when …

Cast copper alloy fragment of the body of a cauldron from the side of the vessel where it is relatively straight sided. There is a single raised, rounded cordon, 47 mm long and 6 mm thick, that runs horizontally along the body fragment, just below and almost parallel to the upper broken edge. These ribs are similar to the wire moulding on a cauldron made by the Sturton Foundry and a Westcountry cauldron illustrated by Butler and Green (2003) on pages 107 & 165, nos.97 & 170, which are dated from the 15th to the 17th century. Body fragment of a cast copper alloy cauldron with two external horizontal ribs or cordons and sooting on the interior and exterior. The cordons are 4 mm in thickness and 10 mm apart. The fragment appears to come from the waist area as it convex in profile, curving inwards towards the rim at the upper edge and inwards towards the base at the lower edge. The curvature of fragment suggests that cauldron would have been about 300 mm in diameter. The burnt organic matter would have attached itself to the surface of the fragment when it was close to the fire, during use. The pair of par…

Cast copper alloy cauldron foot, trapezium-shaped in plan, triangular in profile and rectangular in section, broken at the point where it would have attached to a leg to support one side of a cauldron. The upper surface of the foot is smooth and has never had ribs or claws, and the base is slightly hollowed. The end of the foot has been filed and polished to create a chamfered edge. The angle of the foot to the leg suggests that it might have been from the back leg which supported more weight.
