Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast lead/tin alloy incomplete aviary or cage bird food or water trough with flat bottom, and flared top half with moulded band and rim. The body of the vessel has been pushed out by the finder after having been flattened in the soil, so that it is now semi-circular in plan. There is a small perforation in the middle of the back of the vessel, which was probably used to suspend the feeder within the cage. Read (1988) illustrates and similar example on page 98, number 606, which is dated to the 15th century.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead alloy short skillet leg with four ribs on the outer face, which extend the length of the leg, and four ribs protruding from the inner face, which only extend half way up the leg. The end that would have been soldered onto the body of the vessel has been filed down on the outer edge and the opposite narrower end has been cut. This looks to have been used as a trial piece in order to test the mould for a more permanent copper alloy leg. Or it may have been used as some sort of repair, as lead is easier to work with, and has to be heated to a lesser degree, but it is difficult…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead shot, presumably linked to another lead shot with the rod of iron that protrudes out at a 90 angle from the surface of the sphere. The lead shot was cast around the iron rod in a mould, and the casting seam remains around the circumference of the sphere, from the iron rod outwards. The shot is 30 mm in diameter, and the rod is 14 mm long and 4 mm thick. Read (1988) illustrates some examples of lead shot on page 205, No.1435, which are dated to post 1769.

Incomplete lead cloth seal, for a worsted cloth from Norwich, c.1650-1705. The seal presumably has NORWICH hidden in the folded disc (Geoff Egan pers comm). One side of the seal is embossed with letters: C B D S R I I I I The letters are the surname initials of the twelve Wardens of the Worsted Weavers Company of the city, listed in the order in which they swore to uphold the Company's regulations for the specific year, as recorded in the Mayor's Court Book (cf. Egan, 1994, pp.46-7, Nos. 81-5). The closest comparable seal is No.81, but this example has one of the few initi…

Incomplete cast lead figurine of a female torso with a skirt and the beginnings of legs, but no arms or head. Some red paint remains on the torso and back of the figurine, suggesting that the dress might have been painted red originally. Registered on the back of the figurine to: J H 841882 REG'D ENGLAND This suggests that the patent was registered in 1882 and that the object is therefore Victorian or later. Bailey (2002) illustrates a lead toy in the form of a woman farm worker on page 64, Fig.13, which is dated to the 1950s.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead figurine of a naked man wearing only a cap, with enlarged genitalia, now damaged and not in its original position. Stylistically, the cap with a defined rim suggests that the figure is from the later Post-medieval period and could be some rough and ready representation perhaps of some figure of detestation in local society such as a rent collector or farm manager. It could even be a version of a 'shy-cock' figure to throw sticks at until it went over. It joins a growing number of one-off figures and heads that are turning up quite widely across the country and being recor…

Cast silver plated lead alloy mount with moulded rosette on central boss surrounded by raised concentric rings and a wreath of leaves on either side of a V-shaped motif. This motif has one central triangle with a 'V' either side which may form the base of the three Prince of Wales feathers that is commonly found on military mounts of this sort, but the decoration above is too worn to be sure. The back of the mount has a rectangular steel staple attached to it which would have taken a thick strap, so it was probably an officer's belt plate. The symbols on the mount, in this configurati…

Incomplete cast pewter whistle in for the form of a hunting horn or pipe, beyond which is what appears to be a Medieval purse, defined by a border of pellets in relief. The horn or pipe expands into a circular recessed bowl with everted rim, and at the centre of the base of the bowl there is a small air hole, 1.5 mm in diameter. The other end of the horn has a circular aperture, 3 mm in diameter, which the user would have blown into, and the whistle is small enough that this end could be held between the teeth to allow both hands to be free. Cast lead alloy fragment of a mount in the form of a horse's foreleg with a defined hoof, fetlock and knee-joint. At the top of the leg there are two raised transverse ridges on either side of a row of punched annulets which are meant to represent decorative harness, perhaps with studs, from the girth to the chest, like a martingale. This style of harness can be seen in Medieval depictions of horse harness such as drawings in the Mappa Mundi and Sir John Hawkwood illustrated in Clark (2004) on pages 26 & 62, Figs.18 & 46, and on pilgrim's badges illustrated in Spencer (1990) on pages …
