Two opposing platform flint cores, rhomboidal in plan and trapezoidal in profile. The cores each have prepared platforms at both ends and the negative scars of the removal of up to half a dozen blades and small flakes can be seen originating from the edges of the opposing platforms. The surface of one of the flints is a mottled light to dark grey and the other is uniformly light grey. Both cores retain patches of the original cortex which indicate that they are derived from local beach pebbles. Bond (2004) illustrates similar cores with opposing platforms on page 120, fig.5.104, no…

Two single platform flint cores, ovate in plan and triangular in profile. Both cores have prepared platforms at one end and bear the negative scars of the removal of up to half a dozen blades and flakes, which originate from the edge of the platform. In both cases the edges of the platform have been trimmed or abraded to remove overhangs in preparation for the next series of removals but have then been discarded. The surface of both flints is a mottled grey-brown colour and both cores retain patches of the original cortex which indicate that they are derived from local beach pebbles. …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint notched and serrated flake, sub-oval in plan, plano-convex in profile and in section. Made on a secondary flake with a layer of cortex remaining on about half of the dorsal face. The point of percussion is visible at the proximal end but impurities in the flint have resulted in a lack of a bulb of percussion although the conchoidal ripples are clearly visible across the ventral face. The dorsal face bears the scar of the removal of at least one earlier flake. Several small flakes have been removed at the proximal end of the dorsal face, resulting in a notched edge with a short…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint hollow scraper, trapezoidal in plan, triangular in profile and in section. Made on a secondary flake with a large layer of cortex remaining at the distal end of the dorsal face. Any evidence of a bulb of percussion has been lost by the removal of two shallow flakes from the ventral face, left of the point of percussion, which is still visible within a very small patch of cortex at the proximal end. A third shallow flake has been removed from the ventral face close to the right margin. The cortex at the proximal end of the dorsal face has been removed by the removal of at least…

A flint horned scraper, sub-rectangular in plan, an elongated rectangle in profile and plano-convex in section. A primary flake, with a pronounced bulb of percussion visible on the ventral face at the proximal end, adjacent to the point of percussion. The proximal end of the flake is damaged at its margin with the dorsal face. At the distal end a steep, wide flake has been removed from the dorsal face, resulting in a concave edge which has then been retouched along this margin of the dorsal face to be used as a scraping tool. The surface of the flint on the ventral face is a mottled l…

A crude flint end scraper, sub-oval in plan, plano-convex in profile and triangular in section. Made on a primary flake with a layer of cortex remaining on the whole of the dorsal surface. A small bulb of percussion is visible at the proximal end of the ventral face, adjacent to a clear point of percussion. There is a sharp change of angle on the ventral face about 12 mm from the point of percussion, representing the intersection between the face of the flake and the remnant of an earlier flake removal. Several steep, shallow flakes have been removed from the dorsal face at its margin…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint backed knife, sub-oval in plan and lenticular in profile and section. A primary flake with the dorsal side retaining a large patch of cortex. There is no remaining evidence of a striking platform or points of percussion. The ventral face of the flake is extensively damaged, partly as a result of shattering during the knapping process due to the poor quality of the flint and partly due to later frost damage which has caused a 'pot lid' fracture at the centre of the face. The dorsal side retains the scars of the removal of several shallow flakes. The distal edge of the dorsal fa…

A flint end-and-side scraper, lenticular in plan, trapezoidal in profile and plano-convex in section. A primary flake, wider than it is high, with cortex remaining on almost the entire dorsal face. The point of percussion is clearly visible in the centre of the proximal margin of the ventral face. There is a large bulb of percussion together with a small bulbar scar. The fracturing of the flake has produced an upturned edge around the distal end of the dorsal face, which is ideal for producing a scraper. Between eight and ten narrow vertical pressure flakes have been removed at this p…

A microdenticulate, sub-rectangular in plan, an elongated rectangle in profile and plano-convex in section. The central portion of a flint bladelet, modified by the removal of a spall from the right margin to form a point at the right edge of the distal end. Both side margins of the dorsal face have been retouched to produce a denticulated edge. The distal end has also been retouched, resulting in an edge which would be suitable for scraping. The completed tool is a combined burin (or graver) and end scraper. The flint is grey-brown in colour and likely derives from a local beach pebb…

A flint obliquely blunted microlith, trapezoidal in plan, lenticular in profile and in section. A section of a narrow flint bladelet which has been snapped at right angles at its proximal end, close to the striking platform; traces of the bulb of percussion are visible on the ventral face at this end. The right margin of the dorsal face of the bladelet has been snapped obliquely at the distal end and the oblique margin has then been blunted by retouch to produce the finished microlith. The flint is a fine, translucent pale grey-brown colour. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar obliqu…

A flint single-platform micro-core, rhomboidal in plan and profile, and plano-convex in section. A large patch of cortex remains on the dorsal face. The proximal end is flat and is the remnant of the striking platform. The ventral face retains the scars of three long linear flakes having been removed from the core, together with several shorter, narrower flakes. The fragment shows no signs of having been retouched or otherwise utilised and was apparently discarded as waste at the completion of the knapping process. A flint single-platform micro-core, oval in plan, plano-convex in profile and in section. The cortex has been removed from the proximal end by the removal of three large flakes to produce a triangular point. Subsequently six shallow flakes to make bladelets have been removed, probably by pressure flaking at the proximal margin of the largest of the three original flake scars. The distal half, or butt, of the pebble retains its cortex and could have been held comfortably in the hand when in use. The point of the artefact is damaged through use as a chopping or crushing tool. The surfac…

A chert single-platform micro-core, oval in plan, plano-convex in profile and in section. The pebble was initially broken in half by a single blow, the point of percussion of which is visible at the left margin of the resulting striking platform. The bulbar scar can be seen originating from this point although the remainder of the surface of the striking platform is very irregular and featureless. Subsequently around eight thin flakes were removed from the edge of the platform, the scars of which can clearly be seen around about three-fifths of the circumference of the artefact. The c…

The distal end of a broken flint end and side scraper, plano-convex in plan, rhomboidal in profile and triangular in section. The proximal half of the tool is missing, having been broken off in antiquity, and the ventral face is slightly concave in profile. The entire length of the remaining, curved edge has been retouched by the removal of many small, steep flakes on the dorsal face, suggesting that both margins of the dorsal face would have been worked further down their lengths. The facets of the resulting scraper edge have been worn smooth through use. The flint is a mottled light…
