A rim fragment from a cast copper alloy cauldron. The fragment is 75 mm in width, 41 mm in height and 3.5 mm thick, widening to 6 mm thick at the rim and a weight of 57.3 g. The rim is out-turned and bevelled on its inner edge with the upper face flat, so that it is triangular in section. The curvature of the rim suggests that it would have been 280 mm in diameter which falls comfortably within the normal range for a cauldron and suggests a vessel with a capacity of between 4½ and 6 gallons. The exterior surface is rough and has patches of black burnt organic matter encrusted on…

Silver finger ring dating from the Medieval period, c.1200-1400. The ring is inscribed on the outer face of its hoop with the Lombardic letters +A+G+L+A+A with each letter separated by a cross potent. The inscription has amuletic significance representing the words, translated from Hebrew: Atha Gebri Leilan Adonai, meaning 'Thou art mighty forever, O Lord'. It was invoked as a charm against fever during the Middle Ages. See O. M. Dalton, Catalogue of Finger Rings (London, 1912), pp.135-6. This ring has an extra 'A' at the end of the inscription which may not represent a…

Object type: SICKLE
Broad period: IRON AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy socketed sickle dating from the Early Iron Age, c.800-700 BC. The crescentic blade is 120 mm long, 35 mm wide and 2 mm thick and has a flat mid-rib on both faces defined by a pair of grooves that are 14 mm apart near the socket and taper to a point 12 mm in from the end of the blade. The outer edge of the sickle blade is thinner at 1 mm and sharper, though damaged, than the internal edge which is 1.5 mm thick, but the internal edge is usually considered to be the cutting edge on sickles so this would appear to be a double-bladed tool. The socket is at right angles to…

Cast copper alloy rim fragment from a bowl or cooking vessel with a 15 mm wide internally bevelled rim that is triangular in profile and flush with the upper edge of the vessel. The body of the vessel curves downwards slightly, in profile, to suggest a shallow straight-sided bowl, and the curvature of the rim, in plan, suggests a diameter of about 300 mm. The bevelled rim itself is 6 mm thick which then tapers to the body which is 5 mm thick. The interior surface of the fragment is pitted from the sand casting process and the exterior surface has many parallel horizontal lines which a…

Cast copper alloy rim fragment from a bowl or cooking vessel with an internally bevelled rim that is triangular in profile and flush with the upper edge of the vessel. The body of the vessel curves downwards slightly to suggest a reasonably deep straight-sided bowl or a deep straight-sided everted rim, as seen on cauldrons, and the curvature of the rim suggests a diameter of about 320 mm. The bevelled rim itself is 7 mm thick which then tapers to the body which is 6 mm thick. The surface of the interior and exterior is mottled black burnt organic material, which suggests that the vess…

Four stamped copper alloy coin weights for the gold guineas and half guineas of George III (1760-1820) issued by Street & Pyke of Bridgwater (1773-1800), dated to 1775 on the reverses. The four weights all have 'STREET & PYKE' on the obverses, and 'NEW STAND' (for 'new standard') and 1775 on the reverses. Each weight has numerals below the letters 'P' (for pennyweight) and 'G' (for grain). One coin weight, which weighs 8.3 g, has the numerals '5 : 8' under these letters, which would equate to 5 pennyweights and 8 grains. One pennyweight equates to 24 grains (Withers, 1995, 53), so …

Incomplete cast copper alloy barrel tap missing its tap key, which would have slotted into the square socket or trunnion around the rectangular pin inside. The key would have originally turned in the trunnion to allow the liquid to flow through an opening to the spout. The key opened and closed a valve, and below the socket the projecting housing in which the valve turned was adjustable by a slotted screw head. The barrel tap has a circular sectioned spigot which tapers towards the end for fitting into the barrel. The end is capped by a circular element with one central perforation, 2…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy spur with a side that is hemispherical in section, with a lateral figure-eight terminal. One of the loops of the figure-eight terminal holds the hook of a stud chape which would in turn have attached to the undersole leather of the boot, to secure the spur. The hook expands into a circular plate which extends to a pointed terminal that holds the stud which is teardrop-shaped in plan and plano-convex in profile. There are patches of dark green patina on the surface of the side of the spur, but the chape is more corroded. Read (1988) illustrates a simi…

Solid cast lead handle from the butt end of a toy pistol with two circular apertures at the broken end, within an expanded collar, which would have attached to the body of the gun. The complete example has another matching collar at the end of the barrel, and a trigger mechanism to enable the gun to be fired. The handle has been decorated on both sides with three moulded curved lines, defined by four rec…
