A pottery barrel costrel of Merida red ware from Spain dating from the 16th century. The costrel is 325 mm long, 245 mm wide and 255 mm in height and at the neck, 8 mm in thickness. The fabric is a hard sandy ware with fine white mica inclusions and is reddish orange fading to pale orange in colour. It may originally have been coated with a thin layer of slip, but prolonged immersion in sea water has eroded the surface which is now coated with thin patches of marine salts and occasional calcified fragments of the tunnels of marine invertebrates. An incomplete moulded copper-alloy mount depicting the head of a satyr, faun or the god Pan, with a beard and truncated horns in the forehead, at a 45 degree angle between facing and being in profile. The remains of the horns are projecting stumps that are now 3 mm in height and 3.5 mm in diameter. The ears are not pointed, as they are normally depicted in classical representations of the satyr, which suggests a post-Roman date. There is a castelated 'M' on the obverse above ZEELANDIA which denotes the mint of Middelburg which was the capital of the provence of Zeeland. On the reverse are the number and letter, '2' and 'S', either side of the lion, referring to two stuivers. Carew-Hazlitt (1974) illustrates a similar example of a double stuiver from another province, West Friesland, on page 413, the bottom figure.

Incomplete cast and tinned copper alloy Post-medieval double loop trapezoidal buckle, missing one loop, but with pin intact. The loop has a trefoil outer edge with three rounded knops and a transverse groove running the length of the edge and another groove perpendicular to this in the middle of the central knop for the pin rest. The strap bar also has rounded knops at either end and is flush with the frame. The second loop of the buckle has broken off where it would have met the knops at the end of the strap bar. The weight is sub circular in plan and plano-convex in section; between 37 mm and 39.5 mm in diameter, 14 mm in height and 93.7 g in weight (3.3 oz).
