A flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating from the Late Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age (c.2500-1500 BC). An equilateral triangular in plan, lenticular in profile and in section: length 21.2 mm, barb width 21 mm, thickness 4 mm and weight 1.35 g. The flint is fine textured and dark brown in colour. The arrowhead is made on a tertiary flake, with no cortex remaining. The lateral margins have been retouched by the removal of many small pressure flakes on both the dorsal and ventral surfaces, producing the sharp edges of the arrowhead. The proximal end has been altered by the removal …

A flint leaf-shaped arrowhead dating from the earlier Neolithic period. Made on a tertiary flake of pale grey flint, flecked with one large and many very small cream-coloured inclusions, probably derived from a local beach pebble. The remnant of the striking platform is visible at the proximal end, where it would have been hafted to the arrow shaft, with a very slight bulb of percussion barely visible on the ventral face. The margins of the ventral face have been retouched, abruptly at the lateral edges but more invasively at both ends. The retouch on the dorsal face is generally inva…

A later Neolithic petit tranchet arrowhead. The arrowhead is trapezoidal in plan and section and lenticular in profile and 24.5 mm in length, 21.5 mm in width, 5 mm in thickness and 2.9 g in weight. The arrowhead is made on the middle section of a blade from which both the proximal and distal ends have been snapped off. The conchoidal ripples on the ventral face of the original flake are visible, running at right angles to the main axis of the finished arrowhead. The broken distal and proximal ends of the dorsal face have been blunted with abrupt retouch. The pronounced medial ridge o…

Flint broken leaf-shaped arrowhead dating from the Neolithic period. The tip is pointed but almost half of the opposite end is missing, which would have been attached or hafted to the arrow shaft, so was probably still attached when this was broken during hunting. The arrowhead is tear-shaped in plan with the point slightly waisted as it tapers to the distal end and the proximal end slightly angled as it curves around to the broken edge, suggesting it is a Type 3B, letter n in Green's 1980 classification illustrated in Bond (2004) on page 123, fig.5.107. Bifacially worked with fine re…

Flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating from the Beaker period, from the Late Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age (c.2500-1500 BC). The arrowhead is triangular in plan with curved sides and lenticular in both profile and section. It has low angle retouch on about half of both faces, with fine pressure-flaked retouch on all of the margins. Both barbs are pointed and the tang is wide and slightly longer than the barbs and gently rounded at the base, placing it within the Beaker barbed and tanged arrowhead group Sutton B, Type g, of Green's 1980 classification illustrated in Bond (2004) o…

Flint transverse arrowhead, chisel type, triangular in plan, lozenge-shape in profile and in section. The distal end has had a 'tranchet' flake removed from the dorsal face to create a bevelled edge on this, the longest side of the triangle. This entire edge has then been retouched on the ventral face to make the edge more serrated. On the ventral face at the proximal end, there are three fractures emanating from the edge of the bulb of percussion where it has been snapped off. This proximal end is the base of the arrowhead, where it would have been hafted on to an arrow shaft. On the…

Incomplete flint oblique arrowhead, missing its point, triangular in plan with a hollow base, and lozenge-shaped in profile and section. The point has been snapped off during use. The base with its slight barbs on either side would have been hafted on to the arrow shaft. There is invasive retouch on both the dorsal and ventral faces, and on all margins and there is damage at both the distal and proximal ends. The dark translucent grey colour suggests that it is not local beach flint but may be imported into the county from sites like Beer Head in Devon. The length to breadth ratio is …

Flint leaf-shaped arrowhead, broken and snapped into a kite-shape in plan, lozenge-shaped in profile and section. The dorsal and ventral faces are both retouched on the right and left margins, which meet to form a point. There is more invasive retouch on the right margin of each face, which may have aided in its ability to be more aero-dynamic. The base of the arrowhead might have been more rounded, but is now missing, and probably snapped off where it was originally attached to the arrow shaft. The arrowhead may have been used again, after it had broken, as one side appears to have b…

Incomplete flint petit tranchet arrowhead, trapezoidal in plan, and slightly plano-convex in profile and section, but very thin. The arrowhead has been unifacially worked on the right and left margins of the dorsal face and there has been a large flake taken off the distal end to create a chisel-like edge. The proximal end has been snapped off, probably to make the arrowhead better for hafting, parallel to the chisel edge which is typical of petit tranchet arrowheads. The flint is a mottled brown to dark grey colour and was probably knapped from a local beach pebble. There is dark s…

Incomplete flint leaf-shaped arrowhead, triangular in plan, and lozenge-shaped in profile and section. The dorsal face has been retouched throughout and both margins are bifacially retouched to create a point at the distal end. The ventral face has only been retouched at the margins and retains a smooth surface with some gloss across the whole face showing evidence of use-wear. The proximal end, which would have been attached to the haft or arrow shaft, has been broken off and is now missing, most likely through use. Flint oblique arrowhead, triangular in plan, and lozenge-shaped in profile and section, with one of the apexes or points of the triangle extended to a considerable length to create a long narrowed barb. The arrowhead would have been hafted centrally to line up with the point and the haft tied to the barb as there appears to be wear on the indented edge of the left margin of the dorsal face, diagonally opposite the centre of the base margin, across the barb. The arrowhead has been bifacially retouched on two out of three sides: the base margin and the right margin of the dorsal face or the left margin of the ventral face. Flakes have also been taken off to flatten the arrowhead from the left margin of the dorsal face across to the medial ridge and across the ventral face. The flint is opaque and light brown in colour, and its length to breadth ratio is about 5:4. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar Brit…

Flint laurel leaf-shaped arrowhead, ovate in plan, and lozenge-shaped in profile and section, with traces of grinding and polishing on the medial ridge of the dorsal face. The arrowhead is bifacially retouched around the entire circumference of the piece, on all margins, including the proximal end where the curvature of the edge ends in a slight barb on the right margin of the ventral face. This end might have been reworked after the original tip of the arrowhead broke off, probably during use, in order to form a new point. The flint is an opaque light grey colour, which suggests th…

Flint leaf-shaped arrowhead that has been bifacially reworked or retouched on the entire edge of both the dorsal and ventral faces. The reworking extends further onto the ventral surface from the proximal end of the right margin of the arrowhead, over the remains of the bulb of percussion. A fracture on the dorsal face, running at right angles to the medial ridge, towards the proximal end obstructs working in this area. There is no cortex remaining on the flake and the flake would have been chosen particularly for an arrowhead as its medial ridge runs centrally, but at an angle, th…

Flint barbed and tanged arrowhead, arrow-shaped in plan and lozenge-shaped in profile and section. The two barbs are short and stunted and do not extend to the end of the tang, but instead are at right-angles to the tang and end at the point where the tang begins. The arrowhead is bifacially worked throughout and there are two notches, one half way along the left edge of the ventral face, and the other between that and the point. The flint is a dark grey colour, and may have come from Beer Head in Devon. The length to breadth ratio is 3:2. Bond illustrates a similar example on…
